Constantine to join KVA in 2008 season By Jef Rietsma Sturgis Journal Published: Tuesday, July 17, 2007 8:19 AM CDT E-mail this story | Print this page CONSTANTINE - The St. Joseph Valley League has officially shrunk to four teams. On Monday, board of education members in Constantine approved joining the Kalamazoo Valley Association. Despite having to orchestrate the move ??†the district will have its swansong in the St. Joseph Valley League in 2007-08 ??†Constantine Athletic Director Mike Messner said afterward he was probably the saddest person in the audience as board members voted on the matter. “I got my indoctrination to the St. Joe Valley League in 1955 when I was 8 and my dad took me to my first Tomahawk (Constantine-White Pigeon varsity football) game,†Messner said. “It was here in Constantine and we got beat,†Messner added. “Dad took me out on the field after the game and I remember looking at these gigantic guys with tears in their eyes, and even at that young age the significance of the rivalry and what the SJV is all about hit me and has stuck with me even to this day.†With Schoolcraft also making the jump to the KVA, and Colon and Battle Creek St. Philip exiting the league next year as well, the St. Joseph Valley League for now is left with Centreville, Bronson, White Pigeon and Mendon for the 2008-09 season. While many district employees and parents lament the school’s departure from the SJV League, nobody in attendance Monday spoke out against the plan. Girls varsity track coach Chad Thelen said if the district did not act now in joining another league, it would probably have regrets eventually, even at the expense of losing the athletic rivalry with White Pigeon. “It would be naïve to think (the remaining SJV teams) aren’t going to do something, so the switch is in our best interest,†he said. Varsity football coach Shawn Griffith said he, Messner and other Constantine coaches put together a number of scenarios as a member of a potential five-team SJV League. Nothing viable worked, he said. “The KVA has given us a solution too great to pass up,†he said. Andrea Baker, a senior who plays basketball, volleyball and track, said while she feels fortunate to be a part of Constantine’s final year in the SJV League, she declared “it’s not a bad move.†Current schools in the KVAA are Vermontville-Maple Valley, Olivet, Battle Creek Pennfield, Parchment, Galesburg-Augusta, Delton, Kalamazoo Christian and Kalamazoo Hackett. As a 10-team league, the KVA might not have room for non-conference football games, leaving the Tomahawk rivalry as a likely casualty. Messner said he and his league counterparts looked for two additional teams to replace Colon and St. Phillip, sending out feelers with no success to the Southwestern Athletic Conference, the Lakeland Athletic Conference, the Big 8 and the KVAA. He said varsity football appears to be the stumbling block. Messner said it’s clear schools outside the SJV are reluctant to play in a league that features perennial football powerhouses Schoolcraft, Mendon and Constantine. Board President Jeff Zimont said he has heard concerns about travel times to some of the further locations; it’s 86 miles from Constantine to Vermontville and 75 miles to Olivet. He said, however, that he trusts Messner’s judgment and that he’s convinced the district will not compromise its students’ academics by joining the KVA. Messner said there is the possibility of neutral-site venues in certain sports. For example, he cited a four-team wrestling match involving Constantine, Schoolcraft, Olivet and Vermontville-Maple Valley could take place at a Kalamazoo location. Constantine, a charter member of the SJV League that formed in 1952, played in a quasi-league in girls tennis last year. Messner said Constantine was one of just three SJV schools offering the sport, so the trio formed an unofficial league with five KVA schools. Messner in the 1960s, by the way, went on the play in four Tomahawk games and has served as the district’s athletic director the past 15 years. The Oct. 12 Tomahwak game, a series that dates to 1931, will be played this year at Constantine. Messner said already he is inviting Constantine football and cheerleading alumnus to the game. With it potentially being the final Constantine-White Pigeon varsity football contest, he expects it to be an emotional, bittersweet event. “Mendon and Schoolcraft are always big games for us, but in terms of rivalry, nothing is bigger than Constantine-White Pigeon,†he said.
