Death by Decibels began in 2004 after founder Si McNair noticed a distinct under-representation of the metal music genre on todays airwaves outside of the Big Stations such as Total Rock, Kerrang and XFM. Having been an avid metaller since his early teens Si had by this stage become tired of hearing the same metal bands on the same stations for as long as he could remember and so made the call to Queens Radio to see if they would be interested in letting him inject some metal-tinged diversity into their playlist, and indeed into NI radio as a whole.

The show began in November 2004 with Si and his trusty co-presenter Goof playing everything from Arch Enemy to A Perfect Circle, Mad Capsule Markets to Mayhem and Strapping Young Lad to Satyricon. Keeping themselves up to date with the latest bands through metal music media such as Metal Hammer/Terrorizer etc and also keeping an ear to the ground on the local talent scene (both North and South of the border) through sites such as metalireland.com and MySpace; Si and Goof hit it off immediately with their often unpredictable and non-linear playlists.

The beginning of last year saw the departure of Goof and the introduction of current DbdB Co-Anchor Mr. Greg McLarnon, and also witnessed a radical reinvigoration of the show as a whole. Whilst the fundamental emphasis is still on playing as diverse a playlist of metal as possible (as well as incorporating the more mainstream contemporary metal) and on ensuring a style of presenting that makes the show easy to listen to for even those with only a slight interest in metal. Having fostered a close relationship with Roadrunner Records (the biggest metal record label in the world, home to bands such as Slipknot and Trivium) we were privy to exclusive face-to-face interviews with bands such as Trivium and Max Cavalera of Soulfly, as well as a host of exclusive phone interviews with bands such as Killswitch Engage, Every Time I Die and Cradle of Filth. Si and Greg totally committed themselves to making DbdB as professional and as substantial a student based radio show as possible. Whatsmore, the pair have self-taught themselves in their own time to use Adobe Audition wave editing software to a competent level; self-producing the show intro and stings themselves, as well as editing and producing all of their own interviews.

The latter half of the last season of DbdB saw Si and Greg turn their sights to the growing local metal scene in NI and it is now a show policy to promote the music which is being made on our listeners doorsteps. Our plans for the next season of DbdB include a continuing of airing exclusive interviews with the big stars of metal, but also to have a different local metal band in studio for live on-air interviews every other week. And judging by how much the show has grown and become known in the 05/06 season, the 06/07 season really does look like being the best yet.

The new DbdB MySpace page will be updated regularly with various clips from the show as well as all of our playlists, and a calendar highlighting upcoming local metal gigs in NI
