My main interest is drawing. I've been drawing since I was old enough to hold a pencil (before that I drew with my telepathic powers). I'm constantly doodling things, and I'm as surprised as anybody by the things that come out of my pencil.
I like to collect action figures, and I don't care who knows about it. Mostly Star Wars, superheroes, Gundams and Simpsons. I have way too many of them. I've kind of slowed down on buying and collecting them since I got a house. I have them all on display in a spare bedroom. I'm trying to keep them contained inside one room so it looks like a grown-up lives in my house.
Another of my hobbies is buying DVDs and then never watching them. I have more movies & TV boxsets than I can ever possibly watch. I can't help it--I just can't stop myself from buying them. Something about the artwork and that smooth, slick snapper case makes me want to own DVDs of movies I don't even care that much about. I'm sick. Sick I tell you! Is there a DVD Annonymous?
I also collect tiki mugs and hula girl statues... pretty much any kind of tiki item. I don't really know why I like tiki stuff so much, because it's normally found in smoke-filled bars, and I wouldn't be caught dead in one. It's a mystery, and God willing, with Matlock's help I'll solve it one day.
I'm very interested in asian cultures, especially China. I spent 2 weeks there last year and it was a real adventure. It really was like vacationing on another planet. The people were very friendly, the scenery was gorgeous, and the food was incredible. I can't wait to go back.
I love pretty much any kind of Chinese food, so recently I've been attempting to cook some on my own. I tried cooking hot/sour soup and fried lotus root. So far my experiments have been... edible. At least I haven't poisoned myself yet. There's a LOT of room for improvement though.
In a related note, I like to go to Chinese groceries and look around at all the strange and exotic products there. Well, strange and exotic to me, anyway.
One of my fondest desires is for a rogue comet or asteroid to smack into the Earth and wipe out our whole sorry civilization. No, I'm not kidding.
I walk a lot for excercise, in an effort to stay fit and prevent the fire department from having to pry the side of my house off so they can drag my 500 pound corpse onto a flatbed truck and transport it to the morgue.
I used to really be into bicycling, and I would ride 30+ miles every day. I don't ride after I moved to my current city, because the drivers here are all bat$#!+ insane, and I don't feel like risking my life on a daily basis to get some exercise.
I also enjoy not ironing my clothes and growing arm hair.
I honestly can't think of anyone I'd go out of my way to meet. So-called "celebrities" just don't impress me.
If I was forced to come up with some names, I suppose I'd like to meet Bruce Campbell. And maybe Jack Black, (although I get the feeling that you'd be worn out after being around him for more than half an hour). I wouldn't mind meeting Parminder Nagra (Bend It Like Beckham and ER). I think she's really beautiful and I'd eat bees for her. I guess I would have liked to have met Vincent Price, but it's a little late for that now. Pretty eclectic list, eh?
Oh yeah--I'd like to meet George Lucas so I could tell him thanks for ruining Star Wars with his $#!++y prequels.
I have had run-ins with a few celebrities. So far most of them have been incredibly nice. One of the nicest celebrities I've met so far was Joyce DeWitt from Three's Company. She was incredibly friendly and talked with my friend Mike and I for a long time. I felt like I'd known her for years. She still looks pretty much like she did in the 70s, too. I told her I always thought she was hotter than Suzanne Somers.
I also met Leslie Nielsen briefly years ago. He seemed like a nice guy. And I met Yvonne Craig, TV's Batgirl. She was nice in a professional kind of way.
I swear by all that is Holy; if I see this commercial one more time I'm going to take my own life...
And note to the Head On company: Your new ad campaign where you feature users of your product making fun of your commerical is just as bad, if not worse than the original.
As if the commercial wasn't bad enough, they charge TEN BUCKS for a little tube of this crap!
Whenever I'm down I look at these photos and they make me laugh every time. I wouldn't have thought it physically possible for a dog to lie like that. He looks like he ran into the back of the couch and knocked himself out. I wish I had a cool dog like this (please excuse his prominent weiner).
This is one of my all time favorite movie scenes. I've watched it dozens of times and I never get tired of it. Every time I see the hot woman in the gold dress shaking and dancing it makes me happy. Kudos to her hairdo as well, for withstanding all that head shaking. This video makes me wish there really was a cool club like this, where people in domino masks danced to Indian surf music. Choopa choopa dekka dekki!
The Double Deckers! Not many people remember this show, but it was one of my favorites as a kid. It was a British show about a bunch of kids with a cool club house, who apparently didn't have any parents and never went to school and got into all kinds of harmless trouble. Every kid's dream! My favorite DD was Sticks, because he was the lone American and I suppose I identified with him. I remember wishing I could somehow be one of the Double Deckers. It's also got one of the catchiest theme songs ever. You WILL NOT be able to get it out of your head--you've been warned. It's too bad I can't sing the theme song properly anymore--those kids can hit some pretty high notes, and I'd probably sprain something if I tried. I wish this would come out on DVD.
HA, I KNEW it!
This is what I'd look like if I were on South Park.
Judging by her overzealous, demonic expression, it looks like she's just a little too into that bread...
There's something vaguely disturbing about this kid, but I can't quite figure out what it is.
All hail our Dark Lord, Van Camp's Pork & Beans.
So was this the first AND last issue?
I don't listen to a lot of music, but I like R.E.M., Talking Heads, Midnight Oil, Foo Fighters and Jet. As I've grown older I've also developed an appreciation for the music of Johnny Cash. I know, I know, don't I like any music from this century?
What kind of movies do I like, you ask? Geez, you're nosey. I don't undertand why my opinions are so important to you. But, if you gotta know...
I have a somewhat perverse love for bad movies. I think watching a bad movie is kind of like driving by a gruesome car wreck. I'm horrified, yet I can't look away. It's fascinating to me to see how just about every aspect of a production can go so horribly wrong.
I feel that no movie is truly bad if it's entertaining. The worst thing a movie can ever do is be boring. If I'm entertained, then the movie's done its job, no matter how cheap or poorly made it is. I'd take an entertaining grade-Z monster cheapie over any big budget Hollywood spectacle any day.
I also like old sci-fi/horror B movies. Anything with a monster, man in a rubber suit or a giant bug in it is okay in my book.
I really like Godzilla and Gamera movies as well, because sometimes you just feel like relaxing and watching a guy in a lizard suit fight a giant moth dangling from a wire.
I like comedies, but I'm getting weary of all the "turd comedies." Seeing someone accidentally eat a turd or screw a pie just ain't that funny to me. See "Napoleon Dynamite" or "Little Miss Sunshine" for great examples of non-turd comedies.
I'm also tired of Hollywood's endless string of remakes. Sometimes it works out okay and the remake is, if not better than the original, at least as good (War of the Worlds, King Kong, Dawn of the Dead) but 99% of the time they're just disasters (Psycho, The Wicker Man). Why do they keep remaking movies that were good to start with? If you're going to remake something, why not remake a bad movie, and try to make it better?
I also have a thing for zombie movies. I can't think of a single zombie movie I haven't liked. I think any movie could be made better by simply introducing zombies into the story. Maybe it has something to do with my longing for the end of the world.
Movies that belong in my all time Hall of Fame, that I've watched dozens of times: Galaxy Quest, Big Trouble in Little China, Shaolin Soccer, Ed Wood, Return of the Living Dead, Dr. Strangelove, Badder Santa and Shaun of the Dead. These all get better each time I see them, and everyone should own a copy of them.
The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao also holds a special place in my heart. This movie had an enormous impact on me as a kid. Plus where else can you see Tony Randall playing 7 (count 'em, seven) different roles in one movie? It's available on DVD. Check it out if you get a chance.
Lastly, I can't make a list of favorite movies without mentioning The Giant Claw. It's possibly my favorite movie of all time. Once you've seen it, I'm sure you'll agree. Why there is no 2 disc Special Edition Director's Cut of this important and influential film, I have no idea. You'll have to go the bootleg route if you want to see this classic, but it's well worth seeking out. Click on the trailer above to see the Giant Claw in action. I guarantee you won't regret it.
It doesen't get any better than this.
Ok, on with the precious list you're so interested in. By the way, even though I said I like watching bad movies, I'm not saying every one on this list is bad. Far from it. Will your life really be better for knowing what I like to watch on TV? Really? Fine, then.
With my jet-setting lifestyle, I don't have a huge amount of time to watch TV, but there are a few shows I try not to miss. Currently I like LOST, My Name Is Earl, The Office, The Daily Show, Reno 911, The Venture Brothers, The Simpsons, the new Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who. I also like watching reruns of The Brady Bunch, The Munsters, The Addams Family, Kids In The Hall, M*A*S*H, Seinfeld (or "Steinfeld," as my mom calls it) and Farscape.
I always liked The Jetsons because I thought that's how the world would look when I grew up. How wrong I was...
I can't make a list of favorite TV shows without mentioning the 1960s Batman show. It had a huge impact on me as a kid, and when I was older and watched it again, I was able to enjoy the over-the-top tone on a whole new level.
There's a 54 part Korean soap opera called DaChangJin ("Jewel in the Palace") that I like too. It's the story of a woman who becomes the first female doctor in medieval Korea. I saw part of it when I was on vacation in China and later saw the entire series back home. Yeah, it's a soap, but it's got enough action and martial arts in it that I'm not ashamed to admit I watch it. Plus it's about a period and culture I know nothing about, and it's an interesting look at what TV is like on the other side of the world. And every time I hear the theme song I feel like I'm back in China. It's worth a look if you ever get a chance.
I used to like watching MST3K until the bastards at Sci-Fi Channel cancelled it.
I can't stand watching any kind of sports on TV. I don't like reality shows either, although sometimes I'll watch the first couple of weeks of American Idol when they have the really bad train-wreck singers on.
The Lord Of the Rings and The Stand (Stephen King) are my 2 all time favorite books. I read them both once a year.
There's a book called The Loop by Joe Coomer that I really like, because I identify with the main character. Check it out.
Mostly I like looking at art books, especially ones that feature retro photos and advertisements and anything to do with tiki culture. I love just about any book published by Taschen.
I used to read and collect comic books (yes, well past the age most people stop, what's it to you?), but I quit when A, I got a house payment, and 2, when they stopped being fun. I want to see Batman fighting an absurd villain like the Riddler or the Joker. I don't want to see him battling drug dealers or child molesters. If I want to see that I'll just watch the news. Plus, once all the comic companies started using Photoshop to color their pages, I can't tell what's going on anymore. Bring back simple flat coloring!
I don't have any heroes. I honestly can't think of anyone in the public eye who's done anything impressive enough to make me want to meet them.
