Myspace LayoutsMultiple Heritage Voices, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund has the aims of looking at the history behind the multiple-heritage population from the 1950s onwards, increasing young people’s participation in focusing on issues around multiple heritage and creating a visual resource that can be used after the project has ended. The project was justified by the fact that Birmingham’s mixed-race population was recorded at 27,946 in 2001, making up 9.6% of the non-white category. The mixed-race population is the fastest growing in the UK, yet there are few resources exploring specific issues regarding its heritage, culture and identity. The project has proved to be an exciting, challenging and rewarding and has provided young people with activities and space to learn about their own multiplicity of heritage and nationality and also aspects of the history of the UK and beyond which have contributed to the diverse world as we now know it. The effect of the range of historical diasporas on diversity and integration opens a dialogue with young people and reveals similarities in experience of migrants from a range of countries on arriving in the UK.There is a youth event for 11-16yrs to explore multiple heritage using drama and poetry...and an evening launch aimed at practitioners and the general community. The launch event will showcase a new free publication which represents the learning and outcomes of this project and a travelling exhibition which will be rotated around local libraries. Each of these outcomes will raise awareness about identity, terminology, culture and 'race' from a multiple heritage (mixed-race) perspective. These events are free. Please call 0121 250 3545 or email [email protected], for further information and to reserve a place at the launch. The evening event will include speakers, hip-hop acts, discussion and carribean cuisine.Look forward to seeing you there!ty and ability to get on with other human beings dispite 'race', colour or creed.I'd love all the support i can get on this as its an issue with infinate opinions and angles attached to it and i would love to hear your comments. This project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and will run until March 2007, we have already put on a sucessful summer scheme to develop some of the themes and will be developing a book, travelling exhibition and launch event for early 2007!!!Please show you support and give feedback and opinions on the concept of the project.
