The music started with Alan Griffith in the basement jam room on Jackson Ave. and then the bars in Madison and later “packin’ the place” in Charleston and Morgantown – the proprietors loved the packed bars Alan’s bands filled. There was The Stanley Lewis Band, Off the Wall, Blue Million, the Rainbirds, and The Cheap Beats. Blue Million has reunited and playing their brand of folk rock blues. Alan now has a new amplified acoustic sound with overdriven leads and a new tool, a ¾ inch socket for slide work. The awesome harp work is still there. Andy Lewis is back and just as steady as ever after several years away from the music scene. Shows open with an acoustic set with Alan solo, covering Americana and classic and contemporary folk standards ranging from Woody Guthrie to Johnny Cash to John Prine to Bob Dylan to Alan’s originals. The originals are about the people and places familiar in every town in America. The originals cover the sight and sounds along the roads we travel and our memories of love, broken hearts, happiness and hardships. The songs are from the heart and we can all relate to them and record executives’ may find a pop song in one of the originals.
With the band on stage, the tempo picks up with more originals and blues rock at its best, covering Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Bo Diddley, Bob Dylan, John Lee Hooker, Cream, The Yardbirds, and contemporaries James McMurtry, the Stones, and Tom Waits. In a smoky bar - you may even hear some rockin' roadhouse dance music and a rowdy crowd talkin' back to the band. For sure, at live shows expect to hear a three piece band that has a tight, grooved, full sound honed with “mileage” in the jam room and playing live music in bars and coffee houses.
