Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent. (Ludwig Wittgenstein)

About Me

Professional philosopher - seriously, I get paid a full time wage to sit around drinking coffee and thinking very hard about the meaning of life and whether we really exist. Oh ok, I'm also supposed to get some papers published and give a few lectures but I must have one of the few jobs whereby as long as you are contemplating something or other you are working.Absolutely fantastic!!! Could I want for anything else?...

My Interests

God, my interests are so eclectic that I don't know where to start. Physical activity and things that broaden my education are my main interests so that pretty much about covers everything available to do in life.

I'd like to meet:

anyone who loves life, is ambitious, aspiring and active, but who also thinks critically and seriously.

Music:

Generally mainstream pop/rock/folk. Current favorites are Gomez, Sheryl Crow, Gorillaz. Occassionally feel like a bit of dance: ministry of sound, seb fontaine, graham park, etc. Often enjoy cheesy pop and 80s: S Club 7, Busted, Five, Duran Duran, Wham. Don't like modern r&b, heavy metal, hardcore, or anything on the extremes of music.

Movies:

Love watching films, especially British / Australian comedies, black comedies, true stories, gritty dramas. Not too into the Hollywood special effects blockbusters though do have a soft spot for the Back to the Future and Terminator trilogies.

Television:

Not a big tv watcher. Enjoy political satires, e.g. Have I Got News For You & Dead Ringers but that's about all I'll watch, unless Quantum Leap is being repeated!

Books:

My job demands a lot of reading, often heavy intellectual type non-fiction. Other than philosophy I enjoy biographies, popular science, modern classics. Have recently got into Russian literature, e.g. Dostoyevsky, Solzhenitsyn & Tolstoy. Heavy going but well worth the effort to gain an insight into 19th and 20th century Russia.

My Blog

Awesome skate session!!

Hurrah! I've finally got to the stage where I feel I can actually skate and not look stupid! Having had my computer crash with a serious error today and then spending over an hour on the phone to Dell...

do you ever start something which you then begin to regret?

Something slightly disconcerting happened to me this afternoon... though let me put it into context:When I lived in Bedford I used to get a regular massage from this personal trainer. He was a bit rig...

lunchtime skate session

I'm supposed to be marking third year dissertations at the moment but they've really got to me today. Not only are they pretty mundane but the sun is shining and I just want to be outside - so I'm jus...

Update on the skateboarding...

I thought it was about time I gave an update on the skateboarding situation. Well first things first; don't get your hopes up about my progression, I'm still pretty shite. But I am getting better whic...

Defining Sport

A colleague of mine recently asked me to write a short piece on 'defining sport'. It was to try to stimulate the debate surrounding whether darts could be considered a sport or whether it was merely a...

Philosophy & Traffic Calming

At last... I've finally been published! Okay, so it is in the village newspaper who would take anything that is half legible (and probably things that are not!) but it is a start.... Anyway, I though...

It is always good to try something completely different.

I keep thinking I ought to write something about my new venture; that is, learning to skateboard. Yes, me, a 29 year old female has started learning a traditionally viewed anti-social, subversive act...

Why gym memberships are often unused

After a summer of trying NOT to go to the gym, I finally succumbed and went to my local home town sweat bucket. It is a former Methodist Chapel and by my view, is worth a lot of more as a gym than it ...
