I still carry a part of that influence with me even today as I listen to a variety of different music. My adolescence was spent getting into heavier, guitar-oriented music, however I never lost that appeal for a good melody or catchy chorus. Two musical experiences would eventually re-shape the way I think about, play, and write music. The first was the playing of Nuno Bettencourt. When first hearing how he played guitar and the funk-fused riffs he created, I was just blown away. It was like nothing I had heard of or that I was listening to at the time. I immediately was sucked in and tried emulating much of his playing. I could never play quite as well as him, but I came away with many things like how to make a guitar more percussive, and I began to focus much more on how the rhythm section and groove of a riff really makes a song move. I dont play quite like that anymore, but I think the obvious influence can still be heard. The music created by Nuno and Gary of Extreme then helped lead me to the second musical group that changed my focus: a little-known band called the Dan Reed Network. DRNs music was much more pop and not as heavy as the music I was listening to at the time, but that same vibe and rhythm that turned me on to Nunos playing was there in their music. Their fusion of rock, dance, and funk, mixed with amazing lyrics that were bar-none some of the best I have (still to this day) heard was unbelievable. DRNs album The Heat is still one of the best albums I have, and lyrically on another level that most artists could really only wish for. If Mercury Records had gotten behind that band like they shouldve, we might all be talking about them. This exposure to more pop-rock music then opened the door for me into other artists I enjoy today, such as Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Sting, and eventually bands such as U2 and Jellyfish. These days I find myself listening to many different types of music and appreciating each for its purpose. My biggest influence in the last few years has come from another lesser-known artist named Butch Walker. His work (including the Marvellous 3) is some of my favorite music and what I probably look up to the most these days. Along with Butch, Rob Thomas and Matchbox Twenty have also been a major influence. They may seem like somewhat-unlikely bedfellows, but as a songwriter I appreciate them both for what they bring to the table. Robs writing relates more to the pop side of my music, but what I really like most about his songs are his delivery. I can listen to a song that is just him at a piano or on a guitar and come away just floored. He has such honesty in his vocal delivery that I think you cant help but walk away feeling what he was trying to get across in the song. Butch has that same ability and has shown more of it as he has developed as a solo artist. For the rest of the laundry list, heres a little mixtape of other bands I enjoy and look to for inspiration: Goo Goo Dolls, Switchfoot, American Hi-Fi, Damone, Jem, Sugarcult, Sarah McLachlan, All-American Rejects, Vertical Horizon. All music © Seven Sisters Music 2006
