Heroes:

Our Father Those who make a difference Divorced parents who co-parent susseccesfully...-*More Important Heroes*-The downs-heart group- the founder Penny Green of the UK and all of those battling the illness of Down Syndrome and there entire family. My heroes are also those with down syndrome who demised at varying ages and stages in the battle with congential heart defects and or other complications of the genetic disorder Trisomy 21.♥=================♥I arrived just ten days early when delivered by ceaserean October 11th 99'... At my birth my color blue/purple clear indication I housed a defective heart... The possibility of down syndrome soon followed... Sure enough by genetic testing it showed I have the extra chromosone...On my first day into the world, I was taken by ambulance to Boston's Childrens Hospital miles away from mom...Two days afterward on October the 13th of 99' mom and I were reunited... However, after a couple of days mom got to go home, while I continued my stay at the hospital...On the early morning of October the 18th mom couldn't sleep-she was either anxious about my soon to be homecoming or mothers intuition... By the time the sandman took my mom a nurse discovered blood in my poops...A battery of tests revealed I had NEC an infection of the bowels known to be a condition that occurs in a percentage of premature babes and not full-term...Imediately, I was prepped and sent back to Boston's Childrens Hospital for lifesaving treatment...Though weak and tired mom vistited me as often as she could; a few times by dad, most other times by the ole' Concord Trailway to the subway to the block down from the hospital then the rest of the way by foot...After 3 weeks and with a whole lot of TLC and a regiman of antibiotics, no food for two weeks to gradual feedings I became much strong enough to go back to our neighboring hospital...Just 1 day later back to Childrens for me for x-rays failed to pick up that I had dead and perforated intestines... Being sick this time and the docs not knowing a thing, my heart was on overload and littearly pounding out of my chest...Two days after my arrival at childrens and barely hanging on emergency surgery was performed thus removing the culprit,my dead and perforated intestines and giving me a colostomy...Mom was most relieved the following day in that I didn't just survive the surgery but indeed my purple hands and feet(from surgery) were back to normal color...Well, when I was soon well enough to start feeding again the docs were concerned over me not gaining weight so they put extra calories in mom's bottled breastmilk...Soon enough on the day before Thanksgiving, I was looking terrible thin and losing a lot of stool... Mom told the doctors there is something wrong, but they didn't want to beleive her...When mom returned for Thanksgiving in NH with dad for the holiday, I was extremely dehydrated and had the most difficult weak and painful cries... Mom voiced her opinion to the doctors, the nurses, the hospital counselor and left my newborn pics near my crib so all would know what I should look like...It was short visit mom had to get back to NH for an appointment to see our new apartment(back then mom was wonder woman)...Mom couldn't get my condition out of her head, I really think she was breaking by this time... On the bus ride all the way home mom prayed over and over again for The father in the heavens to keep me in yes hands...Finally, after she returned home she called the nurse that evening and said "something had to be done about Elyssa"...Well, 2 days later they at Childrens call mom and tell her that I am doing great and looking good they gave me an IV... The rest is they determined that I could not tolerate formulas only breast milk and or nutramigen(yuck)...While still at Childrens with failure to thrive I got to have my heart repaired sooner then planned. On the morning of December 17th 99... Out of the 3 holes the largest was patched with the tissue that grew beneath my tiny heart(hurray no dacron cloth)... My one ventricle was succesfully created into 2 making for normal blood flow...Less then a week later, after 2 messed up potassium tests then by the 3rd that determined I could be discharged... At last home on the 23rd just in time for Christmas!Unfortunately, on the evening of the 25th I was brought into the emergency with an abundance of loose stool...While in the ER at hospital a nurse attempting to get an IV in my head hit an artery instead... Mom was frantic when walking into the room with my peditracian at 2 am in the morning and seeing blood everywhere and so was I... To enable me to settle my pedi allowed mom to take me to her breast...While later on the pedi floor recovering from the rota virus I cuaght RSV... Childrens Hospital came for me...Finally, on January 10th 2000 in a during a blinding snowstorm, I got to go home...While at home I got to do what I do best sleep throughout the night cept for that 2am feeding and then 5 am...I began to grow real fast on breastmilk alone... I loved to babble, smile and do mostly what other 3 months old did... My brother Joshua would smother me with hugs... I found my thumb once but perfer my fourth finger neighbor to the thumb... I flex it back and in the mouth it goes...On February 14th 2000 surgery to reconnect my bowels was successful so as I could make messy diapers!Soon another Holiday be a appoaching and sure enough I would be sick Easter Sunday of 2000 with pneomonia... After 2 nebulizer treatments and with a shot in the butt I was fairing much better that mom got to take me home and aide in the rest of my recovery...During June of 2000 while content in my playpen my brother Josh added to my surgery and intrusion scars another with the fall of a large tonka truck on my head...For my first birthday I cut my first tooth and encountered my first ear infection...On January 2002 I was once more admitted into the hospital for treatment for pneomonia... My oxygen levels were so low that the supervisor for the department that takes care of pulmory(spl) says to mom "if she pulls thorugh this"...Well the following day when Mom told my pedi he said with a chuckle "After what she's been through"...Back in August of 2006 I encountered pneomonia once more... My brother and I were both sick with something he got well after 2 days and I got sicker...Medication and nebulizer treatments at home made me once more well again...Today, I am a very active 7 year old... I am in the first grade(mom loves me in school all day)... I enjoy my favorite cartoon Spongebob Suarepants as often as I can... I also love watching Drake and Josh on the nick channel... I love to play on the computer and make water messes in the bathroom... I am a big eater my favorites are chicken tenders, pizza, pickles and green beans... I still hate wearing my clothes when I am at home...I don't want you to brush my hair, I don't want to be around large dogs, I don't want much chocolate, and I love to do things my way!
