reading, drinking good beer, walking slowly, hiking, kayaking, and being a good person. I love the summer time, and I love teaching as well as being taught. Hmm...good coffee, and fresh delicious food. I am fascinated by Russian history, South-East Asian politics, and America's labor movements. I like thinking about how language forms your identity, and how learning a second language can alter that identity in and of itself. And I love my students with all of my heart.
beer nerds, and bookworms.
I've noticed that my taste in music has changed a bit in the past couple of years. While I still have my basic favorites (Tool, Ween, Janes Addiction, Primus), I've started liking Uncle Tupelo, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, the Shins, Waylon Jennings and such, as well as Robert Randolph, Karl Denson, Ozomatli, Keller Williams, and Galactic. I really like music that rocks AND is good...both ...at the same time. That's good stuff.
Labyrinth, Dancer in the Dark, Bill Hicks Live, Battle of Algiers, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Igby Goes Down, Rushmore, Hamlet (2000)
Family Guy
Fiction authors: Dostoevsky and Steinbeck are my two favorites. Also, C.S. Lewis, Upton Sinclair, Camus, Bill Bryson (for a good belly laugh...and I guess I'm putting memoirs into the fiction section), and Norton Juster. Some non-fiction important and/or great books: A Framework for Understanding Poverty, David K. Shipler's Working Poor, Vali Nasr's The Shia Revival, the multiple-biography The Life You Save May Be Your Own, and many many others. My favorite poet I suppose is Rilke, but I'm not too well versed (bahahahaha!.....aaaahh...puns). I also enjoy reading Newsweek, The Economist, NYTimes, AdBusters, and small town local papers (the police blotter is the best).
My mother for being so tough, and Dorothy Day for being even tougher.
