About Me

The first picture that you see is me with my mother. I cant recall a specific moment like this, its more of a mosaic of smaller memories that make up what this picture means to me and music was the foundation of it all. My mother would often tie me to her as many Nigerian women do during their daily routine of work, I heard my mothers heart beat in the music of Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield , The Jacksons, Marvin Gaye and Fela Kuti, a relative of my family but to say he was JUST a famed African musician and a political and social activist would do no justice to his name, fela led a movement. My name is Nosa Edebor and these were the records I grew up to, the younger of two boys in a strong Nigerian family. Ive always loved music and instruments; I started with the piano but was never very serious about playing an instrument until my friend got a set of drums and I got a guitar 12. It was addicting, I couldnt stop playing it. That along with skateboarding which I was also into exposed me to a side of music I had never seen. Artists like The Clash were telling me the same things I heard from Fela and Chuck D. and it got me open. In the beginning of high school my good friend purchased some turntables and I started rapping with him and my friends Will and Adam. We formed a group and would hangout and practice all the time. In one session Will dropped a line that said "Nosaprise the Will to drop an Adam bomb attack." After that day the name stuck with me, I never knew it would be around this long. That really got me writing and into the Houston hip-hop community, I listened to what an emcee was saying not just how he was saying it. Blackstar and other acts showed me that hip-hop could be a platform for youth to be heard. Around the same time I got into a hip-hop class at my school, it was either breakdancing or gym so my choice was easy. It was an experience to say the least, actually it was a moment that changed my life, and it was the most diverse class in the school. Every socio-economic background you could think of, but we got down, we practiced and chilled and practiced and partied and practiced and ended up being a national dance champion. Many of the alumni formed Rhythm N Soul, a well known dance crew in Texas. I realized then that hip-hop was more than just music, it was a movement, it was my life, I breathed hip-hop and it gave me life and helped me express myself more then I ever knew I could.RnS are not just dancers but teachers, after graduating high school all of the members taught in inner city schools and programs in and around Houston. In 1999, I got a computer and some software via the internet, I started making music and feeling my way through the different programs. All my work then and in the following years helped me get my feet wet. After a rough first half of 2004 I moved to London to dance and pursue music. Although most of my relatives are still there I lived in my recently passed grandfathers house. It was a cold winter in Hackney that year. Starving Artist was a tune in my head as a Texas boy walking home from the pub in the snow or spending Christmas alone but everything changed in November of 2004 when a friend from the states came to visit and brought me an acoustic guitar. A fry up, a spliff, and guitar were always on my daily schedule; I started making soul music from a bboys perspective, acoustics with rhyme. "Happy New Year" and "tomyfavoritegirl" felt like letters home, and this is what I did for a year, I wrote and I wrote and I wrote some more. From hip-hop, to rap, to soul, to U.K grime I embraced it all. I got gigs, entered bboy and emcee battles as well as open mics around London and received overwhelming amounts of love as well as spins on pirate radio stations. Ive returned to the states to finish my album called GROWNFOLKS MUSIC and work once again in an inner city middle school. The name of my album is due to my job working with kids, Ive been seeing what kids are into and its sad that music has been perpetuating the wrong ideas for kids. I dont think these artists realize the effect their music has on children, but I do. My music is for adults, not in an obscene way, kids can and should listen to it but music is drawn from life and thats what my music is, its my life from top to bottom.
