The Middle East according to rapper P-Wonda can be better classified as the land that lies in the center of the east coast of the United States. This land is the state known as North Carolina where P-Wonda and his main man, as well as sole producer, Waleed Coyote are from. These two men are just small entities of the larger movement of Othaz Records.Othaz Records is the umbrella for projects including a management company, a clothing line as well as programs that tie in with the local radio station to help up and coming talent in the community. Independent has always been the way of the south. P-Wonda has gotten the attention and respect of many industry cats. Still he chooses to stay true to his family, declining opportunities from major label players, producers and rappers alike. With the newly released mixtape entitled The DaVinci Code and a video for the hit song, “Wet Wet †their going to need troops because the Middle East is about to blow!Allhiphop: How did you get the name P-Wonda?P-Wonda: The name P-Wonda came about because my name is Pierre but everyone used to call me P. When I rhymed there was no telling what I would come up with. I was so versatile that everyone would be like I wonder what P gonna say next. So I came up with P-Wonda.Allhiphop: So you’re from Greensboro North Carolina?P-Wonda: I was born in Greensboro but raised in Petersburg, Virginia.Allhiphop: Why do you guys call it the Middle East?P-Wonda: Just look at the map. You got New York at the top. Florida is at the bottom and what’s in the middle of the eastside? North Carolina. The other reason we call it the Middle East is because my man, my producer Waleed Coyote he’s really from Beirut.Allhiphop: Were you influenced to rap while in Greensboro or in Petersburg?P-Wonda: I started rapping in Petersburg. My mom gave me up when I was a little child to my grandma in Petersburg. I started rapping as a little child in elementary.Allhiphop: Who inspired you?P-Wonda: LL Cool J, Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Jay Z, Big L and Big Pun. Those are people that I really admire. They inspired me as far as how I write. They painted pictures of the life that I was already living.Allhiphop: How old are you?P-Wonda: I’m 22. My birthday is April 7, 1982. I started rapping in elementary. My little cousins Cam and Tray they use to rap and what not and I use to wanna rap. However, they couldn’t write so I use to come up with little raps and I would write my verse and their verses too. We had this little group and it was called Hyper Hyper, Money Money and Nicer Nicer. I was Nicer, Tray was Hyper and Cam was Money. I still remember how some of that stuff went too.Allhiphop: So when did you decide that you were going to be a rapper?P-Wonda: I didn’t come to the whole I was definitely a born star idea until I was incarcerated. I opened for a lot of people before I got locked. I did a lot of shows. I use to win a lot of free style battles over at the radio station 102 Jamz. However, I was half time artist, half time hustler, robber or whatever. I really didn’t have a conscious. When I got incarcerated Waleed Coyote my producer kept in touch with me and was always on me like “Yo, you really got talent.†The whole time while I was incarcerated I used to have it popping with every MC in there. I battled cats. I wrote songs. I ended up performing for the whole dorm, the correction officers and the sergeants. I ended up becoming a legend on the state and that’s when I officially knew what was really good. I had become conscious that I truly was a born star and that one day my name could be something big in this whole nation. Soon as I came home I linked up with Waleed and we started popping my first day out.Allhiphop: Is that how you came up with the song “Jodie?â€P-Wonda: Exactly. This girl I was with for a long time I used to cheat on her and everything but I really loved her. So when I got locked up she was really thugging it for me. She held me down. She was writing me all the time and coming to see me with my grandma. About a year passed and I stop hearing from her. All the old dudes upstate used to be like “What you think your girl doing while you locked up?†They would be like, “You crazy man. Jodie got your girl.†So I started writing “Jodie†and doing that up state. Everybody just started going crazy.Allhiphop: Well was it true?P-Wonda: It definitely was true. She ended up writing me letting me know that she loved me and was trying to hold me down but at the same time she had wants and needs too. She had to do what she had to do which also made me feel like I’m gonna be a pimp till I die. I finally felt like I could love a girl but at the moment I did she moved on with Jodie. So it's real cause now I’m Jodie.Allhiphop: Is it true that Lloyd Banks responded to the song “Stikk U if U Stunt?â€P-Wonda: Lloyd Banks did respond. It went down like nine months ago. It was outside of the Greensboro Homecoming; A&T College homecoming. That’s a really big thing down here. A lot of people were in town 50 Cent, Buck and Lloyd Banks. I had already free styled the song in New York over at Hot 97. When they came to town, me and my man Waleed heard them on the radio and we were like, "Yo they on 102. That’s us right there. We got that on smash.†I called first but I was like "Yo, let me speak to 50." He answered the phone and I was like “Yo, did you get put on with How to rob?†and he was like “Yeah.†I was like “Well, I’m trying to get on the same way cause I’ll stick you if you stunt.†He laughed and everyone got hype. When we got off the phone we were on our way to 102. By the time we got there the cats were coming out. 50 was too good to step over here. Banks at first approached but then I pretty much went over there and gassed them up like I was some promoter cat. “Man this joint is popping. Man play this while you in town.†They road off and give it like 30 minutes later they called the station and it just so happen that my producer Waleed was working. The first thing they let us know was that the song was hot and that we were crazy for getting at them but they respected how we got down. However, they never responded on track. A lot of people thought that they would come back out here and shoot us but at the same time the song has been spreading across the nation. A lot of states have picked it up and put it in rotation. People ask Banks about “Stikk U If U Stunt†and they said that they banged it in their jeeps and they hear it everywhere they go.Allhiphop: Is it true that Lloyd Banks might want to work with you?P-Wonda: He let it be known that he had things in NY that he was working on and that he respected us and thought we were hot and that it could be some potential there. Hopefully in the future we could see a P Wonda and Lloyd Banks track.Allhiphop: Where else is the song being played?P-Wonda: DJ Envy broke the record and played the joint on Hot 97. Also Hot 92.7 was the first station to put the song in rotation and of course 102 Jams. Later Detroit, Chicago, LA, Florida and Cleveland Ohio picked it up. These are the places that showed me a lot of love. Virginia, Petersburg, Richmond; every body loves it. We put out a mix tape called Doomsday. People wanted to know where they could find "Stick U If U Stunt." It was on Doomsday and as a result Doomsday sold a lot of units through out the whole East Coast. We just did it independently.Allhiphop: So “Jodie†is the first single?P-Wonda: Yeah “Jodie†is the first single.Allhiphop: Is this the first album or was there an album before this one?P-Wonda: We trying to come out with my first album and it go platinum. So what I’m doing now is working on 100 songs. I’m gonna pick from those hundred songs the hottest things and I’m gonna put it out on the streets. I’m not giving nobody no title. All they need to know is that Othaz Records is definitely coming and P Wonda is serious.Allhiphop: What should we expect from the album? Any guest appearances?P-Wonda: We got my man Philaz. He’s on the home team you know Othaz Records. He’s a white guy with dreads. He’s really cool and he’s the one who did the “Jodie†Beat. He also did things for Ty Nitty and the Infamous Mobb. I’m doing work with my man Raheem who did tracks for Freeway, Angie Martinez. Jocko, he’s now with Shady records. He did tracks for Jay Z. He did the State Property album. I turned down Timbaland.Allhiphop: Word? Tell me about that.P-Wonda: Well this is how it went down. “Stikk U If U Stunt†was going very crazy. Timbaland DJ is a cat by the name T Love. He does a lot of shows and parties out here. He played “Stikk U If U Stunt†and Timbaland loved it. He was like “The kid got a voice; he could be the next thing I want to work with.†However, you got the middleman who wanted something out of the deal too and he kind of messed it up for the whole thing too. Plus Timbaland didn’t necessarily want to work with Othaz Records as a whole. He didn’t want the artist that came along with me. He just wanted me. I’m true to my fam. I told him that we’d catch him in the future. I also got my man Keith who did Ludacris’ “Act a Fool†and “Too Fast Too Furious.†He’s doing beats for me at the moment. DJ Vanex and Devour they with Bad Boy South, they just did the 8 Ball and MJG album. They did like three tracks on there. They album is doing great right now. All these cats are Carolina natives so when we come out of the Carolinas, it just makes them feel good to be able to work with somebody out of the Carolinas.Allhiphop: So you’re waiting for distribution?P-Wonda: It’s getting to the point where we’re not even relying on distribution. We getting our money up, we got our weight up and we coming very strong. It’s to the pointwhere nobody can’t deny us across the board. We here and we ain’t going nowhere. We’re shooting a video today. This is all us. My man Jocko who I told you was a producer he’s directing this video. It’s for “Wet Wet.†Look for him. We do everything independent. But if somebody want to come and throw they thing out there and let us take over then we willing to get it popping.Allhiphop: How did you guys come up with the song "Wrong Idea?"Waleed Coyote: Yeah we remade that joint.Allhiphop: Did you produce that?Waleed: It's pretty much off of a mixtape but I came up with the concept for it. It's an original track by Bad Ass but we took it and formatted it for the Middle East. Do you remember Big Sty, the man who was dissing everybody?Allhiphop: Was it like a "How To Rob?"Waleed Coyote: Yeah. He's on the first verse of that song. When he came to the radio station me and him kicked it. Since we had "Stikk U If U Stunt" out, he had a song dissing the industry and both of us felt pretty much the same way about the music industry. I was telling him about the Middle East and he was asking me if Virginia was in the Middle East. I was like, "Yeah, why not." North Carolina, Va and everybody who love the Middle East vibe, they could just roll with it. I was like, "Look man, a lot of people got the wrong idea about us. Let's go and do this joint right here. I got this idea. I want to revamp this hook." I called my man Rico Barrino, Fantasia Barrino's (American Idol) little brother. He's the dude singing the joint. And Boom we put Big Sty on the first verse and then the rest of the Othaz Records on there Giuliani, O'Shabazz and P-Wonda of course.Allhiphop: What song was done in L.A.?Waleed Coyote: Oh that's the new song coming out called "Don't Think (Bang Bang).†It's a joint we did with H.I.P Studios. We got a studio that we deal with out in Hollywood. Right there on Santa Monica. They've been really taking a lot of production on what we do. H.I.P.,my man DNA and Victor Newman did the track on that. J-kwon was actually having a session in the studio we were at. He heard the beat and they were real interested but it was a little too late. We had already grabbed it.Allhiphop: Is Waleed Coyote your manager?P-Wonda: He’s my brother and producer.Allhiphop: Do you have a manager?P-Wonda: A lot of managers get bullied. We’re committed to what we do and we also stand firm on everything so no one’s gonna get over. I pretty much manage my self.Allhiphop: What do you have planned for the future? May be a few DVD’s or acting?P-Wonda: Plenty. The DVD is called the Davinci Code 2.3. Its in the works now. We plan on doing some films. Were going to start a label for the committee, which is my family, and dudes I came out of the hood with. My little cousin that I used to write for has his own little movement going in Virginia called VA Entertainment. I plan on looking out for them. We got a clothing line by the name of DroBacks. As of right now, we’re in stores in Atlanta and the Carolinas. A lot of people like them. It got the Droback in the front and the 420 in the back. That’s the international smoke time. Me and Waleed are looking into starting our own management company helping out a lot of the younger artist in this area. We got this thing called “Making Of The Station†on the radio where we let young artist battle MC’s and each artist that makes the station we help them record and teach them how to go from a battle rapper to making songs, to marketing themselves and promoting themselves.Waleed Coyote: The "Making Of The Station." One kid got signed actually to my people in L.A. at the H.I.P. Studios. I got him a deal. He went from being on probation here in High Point where Fantasia's from, to flying out there and never been on a plane before. He's out there right now. I'm just trying to land everybody deals and show them that it's not all about me on the radio. I'm not only gonna push my label but I'm also gonna push the artist out here. When you make the station out here, you become a Jay Z or a 50 around here. You get to come in the station and freestyle when ever you want to, talk about your projects. We push you like a regular artist.Allhiphop: What's good for you guys in the future?Waleed Coyote: We got Davinci Code 2.3 coming soon. We on the grind. We doing shows from Atlanta to New York to L.A. We got a showcase coming up. On Halloween we gonna be back out in Hollywood. We just steadily on the grind all over the state. On every station we doing shows, local spotlights for independent artist to even shows with national acts on it. We about to push this new mix CD. We got a DVD coming.Allhiphop: How can people reach you?Waleed Coyote: You can reach me at [email protected]: I have an email address [email protected]. Live and direct to me.The label has a website which is Othazrecords.com. Let it be known that the The DaVinci Code is out right now and it has “Jodie†on it. It has Mobb Deep on it, Ghost Face. It has the taping of the live show when Envy and Joe Budden were talking about “Stikk U If U Stunt.†It has Rico Barrino who’s Fantasia’s little brother. We are heavily affiliated with the Barrino family. You can buy it on cdbaby.com and on Midatlanticmusicassociation.com you can download and listen to all my tracks. It’s heavy right now.
