experiencing. music, being silent, photography, painting, sculpting, woodworking, reading, laughing, gardening, singing to myself as I go about my day. i do a lot of demolition and light construction work for myself (my house) and by word of mouth for others. mostly lately i've been painting houses for people. i like dancing, be it to rockabilly, new wave, industrial, techno, freestyle, hardcore, swing, salsa, or contra. I wish I could say cooking, but I don't do that well or that often (but my daughter is a fabulous cook). I would say hiking and camping but I don't do that more than a few times a year but i'm intending to change all that this year. I sew and knit fairly often. I'm terribly interested in the discipline of martial arts, but have yet to commit. I do meditate often but not daily. I have been and always will be a student of social dynamics- I'm fascinated and mystified by people everyday. I've traveled extensively and studied exhaustively societies and religions from around the globe. I never stop being surprised by how different our differences are and how unifying our similarities can be. Growing up in Europe and moving around so much kept me on the outside when it came to Americans. I still don't understand them. I'm still trying to. I don't feel i'm any better or worse off than anyone else and don't get along with people who feel they are. We're all in it together doing the best we can with what we've been given.
a Bodhisattva, Maynard or both. I'd love to meet anyone who is bright yet ego-free, striving to find inner depths and a sense of meaning and place. Feels a great sense of responsibility to leave the world better than how they found it. Exercises their intellect and compassion daily. Laughs loud and often. Reads voraciously yet engages the experiences to be had around them. Creative in music or the visual arts. Shares affection and gives from the heart freely.sans the scenesters please
white people are funny
i enjoy it but it doesn't define me. you name it i'll give it a try if i haven't already.
I'm not a snob just because I enjoy films that make me think. If more people just enjoyed them instead of using them to feel superior- perhaps more people would be open to watching them and receiving what they have to offer us all.
The Fountain, Every Man for Himself and God Against All aka "The Mystery of Kasper Hauser", Mindwalk, Pi, Requiem for a Dream, Fightclub, The Matrix Trilogy, Memento, Sicko, Why We Fight, Who killed the electric car?, Crash, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Adaptation, Waking Life, Dancer in the Dark, The Professional, The Piano, Lez Miserable (the French version of 1995), anything Werner Herzog,Woody Allen, Michael Moore, Roman Polanski, Kristof Kiezlowski, Darren Aronofshy, Wes Anderson and the like.
foreign films in general rank exponentially higher than american films and that's a travesty with so many "film makers and film buffs" in the US. learn to like subtitles!
Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Unscripted, The L-word, Dead like me, Rome, gone but not forgotten are... Firefly, Freaks and Geeks and Northern Exposure. Guilty pleasures- Project Runway, Top Chef, Anthony Bourdain, Ace of Cakes and My life on the D list. Who doesn't love Family Guy?Anything on the History, Discovery, Learning, or Travel channels really. I cruise through those on steady rotation when i have the TV on.I went through a phase of the "NO TV" for a few years- it didn't make me a happier person nor a more evolved human being. It's here- in moderation, enjoy it.
Sandman, Cages, Black Orchid, Hellblazer, Blood, 1602 - okay so they're graphic novels. They're Postmodern classic literature! Finished American Gods, Stardust, Neverwhere, and Anansi Boys. Virtually everything I read is nonfiction save the above titles. Spiritual texts from all the worlds religious traditions, with emphasis in the Eastern, Indigenous, and Esoteric. Lots of Joseph Campbell, Huston Smith, Alan Watts, Thich Nhat Hanh, and the Dalai Lama. All that New Age hippy bullshit that makes all of us white people feel so cultured and civilized. I've read feminism, poli-sci, quantum theory, metaphysics, child development and abnormal psychology till my brain hurts and i'm not really any smarter for having done so, so now I'm reading Smoke and Mirrors from Neil Gaiman. Just finished "Your money or your life" and "Nickel and Dimed".
I'd like to read a book that could teach me how to erase bad thoughts and go to sleep when i need to. That would be a wise investment.
Maynard, The Dalai Lama, Alex Grey, Michael Parenti, Cornel West, Gloria Steinem, Andy Goldsworthy- true unsung heroes like people who help the elderly, children, and the disabled daily without praise or honors bestowed upon them. People who have every reason in the world to be mean and hateful, but aren't. People who could be completely ego blown (insert b/c of intelligence, beauty, strength, experience, power, wealth, ability, creativity etc.) but are down to earth and as humble as can be.
