A DJ Bio:If you're been paying any attention to Calgary's house music scene of late, there's a good chance you've already heard – or at least heard of – Isis Graham. Having spent the better part of the past decade knee-deep in Calgary's house music community, slogging it out behind the decks at dance parties and clubs around the city, this diminutive discotheque diva has well and truly earned her keep, and is now on the verge of taking her sound global with the release of her first single with partner Neighbour on upstart American house imprint Alphabet Music. As the daughter of a radio DJ and blues singer whose first introduction to public performance was figure skating as a child, Isis' attraction to all things rhythmic and musical was obvious from a young age. She began crawling through the family record collection and making her own mix tapes by the age of seven, and by the time she made it to her first dance party in her early teens, she was hooked."I guess I just knew," Isis explains of her attraction to DJing.
It didn't take very long for her to find her way into Calgary's tight-knit dance music community, either."I was originally inspired by a local DJ, John Delerious," she recalls. The year was 1999, and Isis was barely sixteen years old."When I used to go to raves, I'd just dance and dance and dance, and I loved the whole idea of DJing, of being in control of the room like that," she says. "I bought all my own gear, and practiced and practiced and practiced… eventually a friend told a friend who told another friend that I was a DJ, and it just went from there."As is the case with many musicians, Isis recalls her first club gig with vivid clarity."It was at the old Soul Tattoo in Inglewood," she recounts. "I was in the basement, and the room was just packed. It was so invigorating - there was this guy who kept hitting his head on a metal tube that was protruding out of the ceiling. He was freaking out, just going off dancing, and people were going crazy. That night totally inspired me to keep doing it, to keep pushing on and here I am."Before long, Isis began to make her name known on Calgary's club circuit. Needless to say, word traveled quickly, and before long Isis found her sounds and services very much in demand. Fast forward five years, and Isis has found herself to be one of Calgary's hottest house music commodities."For the past few years I've played all across Canada, but I'm really just starting to pick up gigs in the U.S. now," she says. Having just returned from a show at the well-known Five nightclub in Washington, D.C., Isis suggests that her recent international experiences have been both challenging and rewarding.Isis has recently made the shift from playing records to writing music, and has been incorporating her original productions into her sets - including a number of songs where, in addition to production duties, she also performs the vocals."I've never sang before," Isis admits. "My mother is a rock and blues singer - she even plays gigs around town herself! I'd never really gone into her territory before, and then one day… we made this track and it went off, the dance floor blew up, so we were like 'ok, this works!'"Working alongside her good friend - a Calgary-based breaks DJ and producer Matt Dauncey (Dj Neighbour www.homebreakinrecords.com) - it didn't take long for their work to get noticed, with Alphabet Music giving a full vinyl release to one of her tracks with a release date set just in time for summer. You can see Isis play every Wednesday at the Amsterdam Rhino for “Wino Rhino†or every third Saturday at the Cherry Lounge’s Blush Saturdays along side Jon Delerious, Dylan Leroy and Joshua vN.
