INFO ON SAVE THE GEORGE TAVERN CAMPAIGN
The George is a listed public house (built 1654) owned and run by artist Pauline Forster ( Wiki ). It is in Stepney in the heart of the East End.
The George Tavern is now a music, performance and arts venue and last year gave over 3,000 artists a platform in front of approx 30,000 people.
The site was illegally split and sold off to different unwitting parties. Pauline was one of these and once she realised, it was too late to go back without losing her deposit.
Swan Housing are a Registered Social Landlord who bought the other half off a previous developer just two years ago (including Stepney's Night Club with its much loved and infamous light up Matrix dance floor), they did not visit Pauline and investigate the incredible boundary issues that came about through this illegal split.
Swan want to build 11 affordable flats, including penthouse, with commercial space on the ground floor (a compromise from last years withdrawn planning application).
Pauline has tried to come to an agreement with Swan over the past couple of years with her main concern being design and use of any building that would be attached to The George Tavern.
Unfortunately Swan had to get their second planning application in before an unknown deadline and negotiations have been stopped until after this planning decision.
The George Tavern will not survive if this planning is accepted by Tower Hamlets.
1) -- Residential Development attached to a thriving venue does not make sense. Entertainment is different now from previous decades with more powerful sound equipment and of course with the smoking ban customers are found chatting out doors more often. Complaints = great risk to license. No license means no business. Planning would never be given to a venue who wanted to attach their building to a residential site -- it does not make sense the other way round.
2) -- The George is a well known and well loved location for photography and film. It is the income from this that has allowed The George to give opportunities to up and coming visual artists (photographers and directors). This income is also vital to keeping The George running and a development which blocks off light, cripples The George location arm. This location is beautiful because of its special light.
3) -- East London is at risk of housing saturation with Hamptons Internationals Residential Property Market Report for LB Tower Hamlets they come to the conclusion that as Tower Hamlets is hosting one third of new housing in London it is coming close to an over supply. Tower Hamlets is also one of the most deprived areas in the UK -- we should take care not to have blanket housing policy over the cultural, leisure and community policies that could improve our failing health, education and employment.
The George Tavern and all its supporters understand that negotiations are the best way forward for any community but we have been left with no choice but to object to these planning applications in order to protect The Georges future and therefore protect all the opportunities it gives to the local community and the arts and music world.

SOME USEFUL INFO YOU MAY WANT TO USE
- The George Tavern has received, so far, NO public funding. We are applying.
- There are approx 10,000 artists, performers and musicians in Central East London. All of whom need places to meet and a platform to show work -- the few places there are should be protected.
