About Me

CHICAGO SABE A BOMBA Y PLENA CON GRUPO YUBA YOU CAN PURCHASE OUR CD HERE In November of 1989, the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center established a song, dance, and percussion workshop which focused on folkloric music indigenous to Puerto Rico, known as Bomba and Plena. This workshop, enriched with culture, developed a series of presentations within the community to promote cultural awareness. In 1990 the workshop was baptized with the name Grupo Yubá. Grupo Yubá is named after one of the bomba rhythms, as well as the hiding place where run-away slaves met. Yubá promotes Puerto Rican culture and folklore, and serves as an educational model for learning about our African roots. Yubá is a leadership project that allows youth and adults of all ages an opportunity to develop and explore hidden artistic talents. Yubá teaches interpersonal skills through socialization with others within and outside their communities. Yubá actively promotes the value of education and the importance of volunteerism, while opposing involvement with gangs and drugs. Grupo Yubá is comprised of children, adolescents and adults. Most of its members started in elementary school, while some are nearing high school graduation, and still others are currently in college. The members of Yubá have become some of the most incredible performers, and leading experts of Bomba and Plena, in all of the Midwest. Yubá has developed a program that covers the various aspects, rhythms, and traditions of how Bomba is practiced in all the regions of Puerto Rico, and the different attributes of the Puerto Rican culture. Yubá has performed at many of the most prestigious institutions in the City of Chicago, and have shared the stage with some of the most renowned Afro-Antillean folkloric artists in Illinois and Puerto Rico, presenting educational workshops in universities, elementary and high schools throughout Illinois.

During the summer of 1995, Grupo Yubá traveled for a month throughout Puerto Rico. They were welcome guests of, and honored by, the honorable Mayor Rafael Churumba Cordero of Ponce. They participated in extensive educational and leadership workshops with the most respected Plena and Bomba groups in Puerto Rico. Yubá was selected to be among the 40 groups who performed as part of the Dance Africa family in 1996. That same year Yubá developed and produced Baquine, a traditional African and European wake and burial ceremony of a child during slave times in Puerto Rico. In 1999 Grupo Yubá was a special guest of Paracumbés 20th anniversary celebration. The event was sponsored by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, and included a tour to Vieques. Other performances include Passport to the World at the Chicago Childrens Museum (2001-2004), Hispanic Heritage Month at various locations, SSA Hispanic Action Committee Conference (2001), Puerto Rican Festival (2004), and Puerto Rican Cocineros Festivities. Yubá has also been featured on Chicagos public television station WTTW..s Discovering Your Roots, NBC 5..s Nuestros Niños and ABC 7..s news feature by Harry Porterfield, Someone You Should Know, featuring Grupo Yubás director, Eli Samuel Rodriguez.
