About Me

Hello one and all! If you're here, you're probably familiar with the etiquette of Myspace. So here's a heart.. width="425" height="350" .. What else? Well, I play Bass. What an instrument. Practicing, a chore? Hah, that's all part of the fun. Although it does mean that I listen out for the Bass in songs before everything else, so sometimes it's hard for me to accept a song just as it is. But pfft. I also like swimming when I can be bothered to rouse myself from the house. And I like computer games. A bit too much maybe, but I could certainly be a lot worse (trust me, I've seen some very sad cases).
.. width="425" height="350" ..
Any other interests or things I'm passionate about would come under politics, I suppose. I'm not a full-fledged member of the Green Party, but I support them and their policies wholeheartedly (namely because their system of social justice and energy use is amazing, plus they're not opportunistic PR-grabbers, unlike David Cameraman). If you've read any of my more recent blogs, you'll know I'm one of those lovable lefties. These blogs, apparently, could get me into the Guardian newspaper according to Helen - which is one of the nicest compliments on my writing ever :D As a result, I'm a member of several charities (I've listed my main charities in the Heroes section, for obvious reasons).
As for any celebrities or whatever, I guess there are some people I admire for their abilities, and perhaps I'd like a chat with them, but I don't have any pin-ups. I can only find people attractive if I've met them in the flesh, and if their personality is appealing. Maybe that's a quirk, or maybe everyone else is just strange. It's like the colour blind thing - how do we know that the people who are supposedly colour blind the ones at fault? It makes you think. And if you really want to know what I look for, I'm a face person.
.. width="425" height="350" ..
Life is choc-a-bloc full of on-the-spot moments, virtually awaiting you around every corner and from beneath every crevice (is that right?), and it can really make one marvel at: a) how incredible life can be, and b) how incredible life can be (I'm having none of that sassy pessimist talk here!)So, without further to do, I've racked my brain, and conceived and compiled various moments that range from the fairly mundane, to the not-so ho-hum. But they all have one uniting factor - they make life even more special than it already is.
Smiling at people on public transport:
Picture the scene - you've been stuck in a traffic jam on your local neighbourhood bus for about ten minutes. People are muttering, complaining or alternatively just trying to ignore the largely irrelevant dilemma of a bus being caught in traffic. Oh! the horror! Then, you feel it. As you sit there, heat wafting in and refusing to leave the party, you start to feel a kinship slowly emerging with the other passengers - you feel their annoyance, perturbance and irritation. You look up, and there's the passenger you've occasionally made eye contact with, but have hurriedly looked away from in case they thought you were a stalker/"weirdo"/mugger/hatemonger (delete as applicable). The traffic is slow - you know it, they know it. That man who has been constantly complaining for the last ten minutes is annoying - you know it, they know it. A smile forms on their face, one that's slightly awkward, yet also wonderfully human and genuine. You smile back, and nod. They do so likewise. No words are said, because they're not needed. All you two need to know, is that you have felt humanity in one of its purest forms.
Teacher's book collections:
It isn't very often that I find myself in the presence of teachers within their own offices, but for one with a relatively paltry attention span, it's always a small joy to venture into them. Why? Because of the books. Books, books, books. And not the airport-recommended trash of chicklit or yummy mummy suburban yawnarama, but books of unimaginable collective knowledge and insight. Whether it's a comprehensive history of Eastern European resistance movements, or writings of the Vietnamese atrocities, they have them in abundance. Do you ever see those little pink notes dangling from the edges of the pages? Isn't it wonderful? These little slips, in an unspoken simplicity, imply that whatever they're clutching onto is in itself a historical or social revelation, immortalised in print and immortalised in the subconscious of the inquisitive reader. A roaming glance across these shelves would reveal an astonishing breadth of topical narrative and analysis, and reminds me why it's good to be at LSE. We humans crave knowledge, crave the joys of learning, and these shelves are testament to that fundamental ambition of all mankind. You have a brain, so use it, god-dammit!
Enjoying music on the walk home:
It'd come as no great surprise to any of you if I said that I like music. It's a given that, if you're on Myspace, you like music. There is an indisputable consensus that yes, music is an incredible force. It has the ability to move us to tears, to move us across the dance-floor, to move our minds to places we never even dreamt of. This is the power of music, and one that shouldn't be underestimated. Music wins, hands down.
So where are we allowed to enjoy music? At home, sure, so long as no-one's watching. You can sing into your hairbrush, or air guitar yourself all the way to rock n' roll oblivion, just so long as no-one else has to witness it, you lumbering embarrassment of a family member. You can enjoy it on the bus, go ahead, just keep the volume down, because "some people don't appreciate it." Oh, the humanity! Loud music! What about in the club? (or In Da Club, ta muchly 50p) That's the obvious place to go, but it's not necessarily the music of your choice. What the club offers is the chance to move, to make your body become one with the music. That's fantastic, thanks a bunch.
But why should this be the only valid location? Why should we allocate dancing time to the club, as if it were some sort of stuffy boardroom meeting? I say no! Fight back! Reclaim music as an immeasurable, indescribable force to be enjoyed on the go, wherever you go. On the way home in the evenings, I have to venture through a long, dark path opposite the local park. The path lamps regularly buzz in and out of existence, casting you into total darkness without any advance warning. And this is fantastic. On my own, I stride along the path, and my CD Player (yes, I am that retro) shifts onto the next track.
We all have a "moment" in songs; that key lyric, the interplay of the guitars on that solo, the fine drumming that traverses one chapter of the song into the next. And here, in the private darkness, I can enjoy the music to the fore. Without having to worry about social pretensions, or having to appear "cool", all inhibitions are released. An air guitar here, an out-of-tune barkalong to the chorus there. It all adds up to an experience that defines what music is all about - it is meant to be everything we want it to be. I'm not listening to the music because it acts as a convenient stopgap between leaving uni and arriving home. I'm listening to the music, because I want to let go, because I want to be part of something I cannot define. This is its greatest strength, its manifesto. And every night, I get to be a part of that.

Music:

Right, bands. I won't just name bands that I like, cos I tend to like bands even it's just for one song. So I'll try and keep it to bands whose stuff I really know. Here we go!
Project 37
The Painter's Easel, RIP
Lupe Fiasco
Queen
Sikth
The Mad Capsule Markets
Muse
Hot Hot Heat
Coheed and Cambria
Skindred
"A"
Portishead
Span
The Mars Volta
Foo Fighters
Pink Elephant
Howard Goodall, the main man behind the Red Dwarf theme (if you're reading this, Mr. Goodall, you are a legend)
The Blood Brothers
Cave In
Jamiroquai
The Offspring
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Skunk Anansie
Pip & Joe
Thin Lizzy
Million Dead RIP
As for music in general, I guess I'm a Rock person through and through (Led Zeppelin upbringing, you know how it is) but I like to branch out. At the moment I want to get into Disco. And I tend to have an inexplicable "thing" for the theme tunes of TV series (Red Dwarf, Seinfeld, Sharky & George, Countdown, Thomas the Tank Engine).
The song that Philip, in all his infinite coolness and stoic-like character, is currently obsessed with is: The introduction to Linkin Park's album Reanimation. True, the album is tosh, but that opening song, with strings attached, gives me the chills every time.

Movies:

In no particular order (and more may be put on):

Shaolin Soccer
Spinal Tap
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Forrest Gump
Finding Nemo
It's A Wonderful Life
School of Rock
Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Wererabbit
The Blues Brothers
Pleasantville
The Incredibles
Muse: Absolution Tour (ok, so technically it's not a film, but fuck it - the music on the main menu is amazing)
Lady and the Tramp
Star Wars - pick any one, I'll probably like it!
Groundhog Day
Hero
Goodnight, and Good Luck ..

Television:

The Simpsons; Have I Got News For You; Black Books; Father Ted; My Family; Red Dwarf; Dead Ringers; The IT Crowd; Seinfeld; M*A*S*H*; Deal or No Deal Gotta love Norman Lovett

Books:

Rather than books, I'll just do it by Authors. Because, quite simply, it's easier. So ha.
All the Discworld novels thus far by Terry Pratchett. If you don't know his stuff, it's a gentle satire on life portrayed through an alternate world where the kingdom of Ankh rests upon the back of a giant turtle. Yeah, it is a bit peculiar.
John Pilger, the investigative journalist. At the moment, I'm digging his latest book "Freedom Next Time." If you think a right-wing, (quasi-)totalitarian administration in any shape or form is acceptable, this man will tell you why it isn't - not because of his own ideological standpoint, but because he actually gives a damn about the sufferings of the people without a voice in the world. Go get 'em, sir.
Philip Pullman - well-known for the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, but he's got a wealth of good stuff stashed elsewhere. Although I must say the last book in the trilogy, The Amber Spyglass, is quite memorable - the first time I ever got the shivers from reading of a boy and girl falling in love. Is the fact that I read that definitive page again and again a sign of obsession? Probably. But ah well.
Whilst not a writer of books, special mention has to go to Charlie Brooker of the Guardian, because his alternative spin on reality is awesome. How about his suggestion of frightening smokers through the use of a sniper? Or scaring people into a diet by forcing them to look at images of brown bums? The man is a genius. Plus he said Johnny Depp looks senile and ugly, so kudos just for that.
Any historians who can actually write decent narrative or analytical history books. If I have to read hundreds of History books for my BA, then they'd better make damn sense.

Heroes:

Here is a list of people who have inspired me in some way, or people who I respect to the full for what they do:
John Deacon, ex-bassplayer for Queen
Dylan Moran, for being one of the funniest Irishmen around
Dave Gorman, for being the funniest nerd around

John Pilger (see above in Books for reasons as to why he is an amazing person to have with us)
David Tennant, because although his eyes are at least a metre wide in circumference, he's a damn fine actor
Robert Lindsay - same as above, but without the eye thing
A certain someone, for managing to get through a lot of crazy and difficult times without losing her grip. SUPERfriend.
