REVELATIONS

"There is nothing more depressing than realising your home town has no music scene. When all of the pop-punk bands you used to watch when you were 15 and smuggling in bottles of cheap vodka have all fled elsewhere, probably to similarly rubbish towns. When nothing remotely creative or noteworthy happens, and you find yourself up to the ears in flyers for bands who spend more time knocking one off over the NME instead of learning to play their instruments, playing your local. Again. Thankfully, then, my trip back from sunny Leicester was worth the train fare and the £1 entrance.
Revelations is a musical project by various members of other Northamptonshire bands that formed as a reaction to the above. Only playing one gig a year, they play a half hour set of experimental music of numerous different sections, defying both genres and scene politics.
Revelations take the stage in a manner that is much less insistent than last years’ performance. There is not as much intrigue now the project is well-known, and has stripped bare of the extras such as the projector and the cover versions that were used in the last performance. This is not to say that this is a bad thing, the basic premise of the band is that is it constantly evolving. The band plays around 30 minutes of music. This doesn’t sound out of the ordinary. But they don’t play songs, they don’t have words. They play 30 minutes of music with no boundaries, that dips and turns and transforms though metal, progressive, hardcore, ambient and even reggae until no-one is really sure what they are listening to, but they know it is played well. Extraordinarily well. The most impressive thing about the project is not as much the principles behind it, but the sheer talent and ability of the band members, who accomplish a performance that will be hard to improve on for next summer."
