Malice Mizer was formed in 1992 by Mana and Kozi to answer the question "what is human" which is where the band name came from (malice and misery).
Tetsu Era (1992-1994)
The lineup for the Tetsu era was Tetsu on vocals, Mana and Kozi on both guitar and synthesizers, Yu~Ki on bass, and Gaz on drums. Their first release official was the song "Speed of Desperate" on the complication, Brain Trash. But they had relased a demo tape without any vocals called, Sans Logique. After Brain Trash was recorded, Gaz left the band to join Kneuklid Romance. Kneuklid Romance's drummer Kami in turn joined Malice Mizer. In 1994, Malice Mizer released their first album, Memoire on Mana's music label, Midi:Nette. Then they re-released the album, though it was called Memiore DX and had a new track, Baroque. Only a day later, Tetsu left Malice Mizer for good.
Gackt Era (1995-1999)
Malice Mizer recruited a new vocalist, Gackt, after a year of inactivity. Malice Mizer obtained even stronger classical influences along with some French pop incluences. The members began to dress in historical costumes. In 1996, they released Voyage ~sans retour~. In 1997, they signed with the label, Nippon Columbia. Then in 1998, Malice Mizer released Merveilles, which became a very sucessful album. In January of 1999, Gackt left Malice Mizer to start a solo career. A few months after Gackt left, Kami died of a subarachnoid hemorrhage. After his death, Malice Mizer released an mini-album/video boxset, Shinwa. Kami was never replaced. The drummers after him were never credited.
Klaha Era (2000-2001)
Malice Mizer released a number of singles after Gackt left. Soon they recruited Klaha, vocalist of the darkwave band, Pride of Mind. Malice Mizer replaced the lighter pop sound for a blend of classical and goth music. They dressed in elaborate funeral clothing. In the summer of 2000, they came out with Bara no Seidou, which would be their final album. Malice Mizer also made a silent vampire film which was called Bara no Konrei (Bridal of Rose). Their final singles were Gardenia, Garnet, and Beast of Blood. In time, the members decided to go their own ways and Malice Mizer became on an indefinate hiatus.
