Looking for Rick Baker

About Me

  • I'm looking for Rick Baker and I need your help.

  • My brother, Jim Ward and Rick were shipmates on the USS Worden CG-18, 1971-73.

  • We've been looking for Rick for several years and have exhausted all resources.

  • One problem is we know very little about Rick, apparently they were living in the moment (see pics 1 and 3) and talked very little about their past.
What we do know is this...
    Name: Rickey Lynn Baker

  • Rick was from Kentucky, possibly Paducah.

  • Jim also remembers something about Possum Trot, KY.

  • He has a tattoo of a confederate flag with the word Kentucky underneath on his left forearm.

  • Served on the USS Worden CG-18 as a BT3 (boiler tender), rank E-4 1971-73.

  • Has a younger sister.

  • Rumours:
UPDATE: The search has been moved to Clearwater,Florida.
    How you can help!
If you ANY information about someone you think might be our Rick Baker please post here or email [email protected] .
We hope to find Rick alive and well but, if he is not, we would still want to know what happened to Rick Baker.

    Heroes:

On Sunday April 16, 1972 around 0340 hrs my brother Jim and Bob Sterling were in the boiler room of the Worden flipping a coin to see who would go up top to get some clean fresh air. At the same time back in Louisiana, it was Saturday afternoon, a pastor had knocked on our door asking if we had anyone in Vietnam we wanted to pray for. Mom said yes. Our family have never been religious fanatics, but there we stood in the middle of the living room, Mom, Dad, an unknown pastor and me (I was 8)holding hands and praying for Jim's safety. Meanwhile back on the Worden, Jim lost the coin toss. Bob Sterling was going to get the clean fresh air, when he opened the hatch he was hit by shrapnel and died instantly. The Worden had been hit by two anti-radiation missiles inadvertently fired by United States support aircraft during a strike on Haiphong. Nine other men were seriously wounded. Shipmate Jim Whitehead has made a memorial for Bob Sterling on VirtualWall.org with a first hand recollection of what happened that night.
