Profile GeneratorSelling out has been an issue within the hip hop community since its inception on the streets of the South Bronx back in the late 1970’s. The Art of Selling Out is a documentary that will consider the controversy that surrounds this issue. Taking a journalistic approach, it will consider the who, what, where, why, when, and how of selling out within the hip hop community. Who are some people within the industry that fans may consider to have sold out? What is behind this idea, and why are so many people preoccupied with “keeping it real?†Where, or at what point does one begin to consider selling out? Why would one choose to do so? And finally, how does it happen? While many may consider this term to possess negative connotations, this film will look deeper to explore where this association came from. Furthermore, it asks if selling out is even a real thing? Is it inevitable? Is it simply being a success? Or is it a conscious choice? While the film focuses on how the issue affects the music industry, selling out is an issue effecting people’s decisions in many different aspects of modern life. From business ethics to interpersonal relationships, the fear of selling out surrounds us all. The Art of Selling Out is a controversial documentary that might offend some and empower others, but regardless of its effect, this film will cause people to think twice before labeling other’s actions.
