Anyone lucky enough to have seen a Kracker Japz gig will testify to their sheer energy and intensity. A meeting of minds and a melting of cultures, they light up a venue like no other. Hailing from all corners of the globe, the KJ'z play a blend of funk fused with hip hop, acoustic and rock sensibilities, driven by lead singer J-Hunt's animated presence, sharp lyrics and banter.
Circumstances collided in 2005 to put Canadian Jason Hunt and US beat boxer Greg Engbrecht in the same creative space. Both recent arrivals in the country and looking for new musical projects, they soon combined to give the first ever KJ's gig. It was a raw ten minute set ・microphones plugged into guitar amps, but even so their talent and presence was clear. The scene was Nara, Japan. The early crowds a mix of like minded foreigners and Japanese friends. Each gig brought progress - soon they were a four piece ・adding Japanese guitarist Michi, and accomplished New Zealand drummer Gareth "Filthy" McGlone. New songs were never in short supply and the next year was spent playing small venues and developing their sound and performance. Greg returned to the US towards the end of 2006, his absence paving the way for Australian Ashley Barr to jump in on bass, his melodic bass lines adding another dimension to the KJ'z sound.
With all the elements in place, things really progressed in 2007. The band were spotlighted in national newspaper the Daily Yomiuri, and played at popular live houses throughout Osaka including the Shangri-La and Esaka Muse. The KJ'z also took their show to various festivals throughout Japan including the San-In Beach Party in Tottori, Indian Summer Festival at lake Biwako, The World Eco Festival and the Kashiba Music Festival in Nara. They had their first television appearance on Music Japan TV at a Charity Seaside live event at the ATC Nanko in Osaka in July and were later asked to headline part two of the event in September. 2007 was capped off in style with the KJ'z performing from atop the 58 storey Asia Pacific Trade Centre tower in Osaka port, to a rapturous New Years Eve crowd.
2008 looks set to be the year the Kracker Japz take Japan by storm. Their raw energy, presence and sound has been compared to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, Monkey Majik and Guns and Roses. The Kracker Japz remain one of the top unsigned bands in Japan. - L.B. (KJ Press)
