We are the oldest karate dojo in the Bay Area, having taught every day since we opened our first school in Berkeley in 1969. At Nishi Kaze Karate Dojo we honor our ancient martial art's heritage. We follow the code of reishiki (a word which goes beyond mere formalities and etiquette) to impart true courtesy towards others, a sense of responsibility and community, and above all, respect for one's self. We put into daily practice the famous words of the founder of karatedo, Gichin Funakoshi Sensei, "Karate begins and ends with respect."EFFECTIVENESS
You will never find a more devastatingly practical and complete form of self defense. The West-Wind student is trained in every aspect of unarmed combat; karatedo, kung-fu, jujitsu, and boxing. All share an integral part of the West-Wind curriculum. In addition, all forms of weapons, from the traditional bo staff to modern day firearm tactics, are taught to supplement your empty hand training. And most importantly, the West-Wind student learns to hone the most powerful and effective weapon of all: their mind.
