Growing up in Louisiana, I was usually silent. MY father was incarcerated, and MY two brothers were in and out of legal problems. MY mother, Siene, worked a night shift for extra money. I was essentially on MY own – at age 14.MY life changed when football coach David Barham and his wife, Melinda, took ME into their home and provided a family atmosphere. Barham introduced ME to football and I watched him blossom into a starting linebacker for the second-ranked Oklahoma Sooners.I GET a little uncomfortable when 84,000 Oklahoma fans are chanting SAYING MY name after I make a tackle."R-u-u-u!"
The Barhams are more than family friends. Though not MY legal guardians, I listed them as MY parents in OU's media guide. TheY have three children of their own but consider ME, 21, their fourth. I'M not the only child they have taken in. They have housed other athletes in the past.Melinda Barham said they could tell I needed a change.I wasn't doing too good, I'd go to class in junior high, but I'd go home and get into trouble. So they told me I had to make a choice then. I could either better myself or end up like everybody else.
