About Me

"...everything on the earth has a purpose, every disease an herb to cure it, and every person a mission. This is the Indian theory of existence." ~ Mourning Dove Salish, 1888-1936
ABOUT ME: Surfer, Artist, Musician, Ocean Enthusiast, Environmental Activist... Daughter, Sibling, Spouse, Mother (in that order)... and lots more.
WHO I'D LIKE TO MEET: People who are unique, fun, energetic, have a firm grasp on sarcasm, and a little bit weird in the head - just like me.
MY LIFE IN TWO SECONDS: Born in suburban Boston. I fell in love with the ocean during lazy summer days with my family on Cape Cod. Moved to New York City after college where I developed the ability to stand up for myself and grew a thicker skin. Traveled to Hawaii where I learned about respect and aloha and became instantly addicted to surfing. Landed in Los Angeles and am now living the dream.
IN THE PRESS:
2003 (Feb) - Making Waves article - Surfrider has also benefited from having some of the brightest women in the world of environmentalism working to protect our oceans, waves and beaches. (I was Nancy Downes at that time).
2004 - Article I wrote for the Surfrider Foundation's Malibu Chapter
2006 - 2007 (Jul) - Surfrider Foundation's Soup - article on US Open
2007 (Oct) - Article by Ben Marcus on Malibu Issues
2009 (Jan) - ENVIRO GROUPS PROTEST LEGACY PARK EIR - "Nancy Hastings, Southern California field coordinator for the Surfrider Foundation, also said the revised final EIR is inadequate and urged the Planning Commission to delay the project until an acceptable final EIR is passed. Hastings urged the city to create a solution for stormwater and wastewater treatment that deals with septic tanks, to build a wastewater facility at Legacy Park by 2011 and to impose a moratorium on all future development in the area until all the aforementioned items are complete."
2009 (Jan) - Narrow City Planning Commission Vote Moves Legacy Park Forward. Nancy Hastings, speaking on behalf of the Surfrider Foundation, told commissioners her organization considered the final EIR inadequate and urged the planning panel to delay the project until there is a formal plan for wastewater. Hastings said there should be the inclusion of wetlands habitat, plans should encompass both wastewater and stormwater, the wastewater plant should be built by 2011 and a building moratorium should be enacted in the Civic Center until the plant is online.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

If the pulse of jazz is the ocean swell, then the trumpeter is the surfer improvising against that backdrop, not by stating the obvious, but by creating space through style and rhythm. The best surfers don't just play the tune, but hint at it with sideways glances, subtle intonations, moves away from the beat, long aching silences punctuated by perfectly timed clusters of blue notes, or just a single shimmering note suspended in space, like hanging ten - suspended animation in that beautiful space between gravity and levity. - Sam Bleakley (surfer, longboard champ, writer and roving surf ambassador)
