PRO VINYLIST DEAN ONCE KNOWN AS THE INFAMOUS DJ EASI; Started out with his involvement in Glasgow’s Underground Hip Hop Movement. Progressing from a “B BOY†at the PLAZA BALLROOM's ’Breakdance Battles’ with “THE SKYWALKERS†& "THE GLASGOW HIP HOP ALLIANCE" with DJ Anton (Later UndergroundStreetTapes), DJ Codes (Later Project A) & DJ Doc to a “GRAFFITI ARTIST†forming 3 crews with Scotlands leading graffiti artist Mak One (Crime Inc). The Electronic Breakbeat Hip Hop sound of “THE ALL CITY CRIMINALS" a graffiti crew & Hip Hop group; the Southside’s Supreme Team of Graffiti Artists, DJs, Producers, HumanBeatboxers & MCs known as "THE BENCH COLLECTIVE" & then the Soul & Funk Breakbeat Hip Hop sound of "BUSINESS AS USUAL" who due to Mak One's departure before they're first demo's, was fronted by Glasgow born Colchester,England MC - MR Liveism (Colchester Massif).
As a “BATTLE DJ", Dean went on to win the SCOTTISH DMC & ZAP CLUB UK SCRATCH MIX CHAMPIONSHIPS at THE FRIDGE in Brixton, London, England. A event that was judged by DMC UK Champion DJ Pogo
(DETT Inc/The Enforcers/Block Party Breaks), Brighton Turntable Pioneer & She Rockers DJ Streetsahead, Outlaw Posse & All Saints Producer K-Gee, Beats International Producer Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim & Rave/Techno DJ Carl Cox. The outcome of which firmly cemented him as
"THE GRANDMASTER OF THE SCOTTISH TURNTABLIST SCENE".
In the early 90s now a versitile "CLUB DJ", Dean co-founded the highly influential “BABYLON SOUND SYSTEM" at RAIN with kindred spirits Sace; his then DJ partner & bandmate with whom he also founded "NT" & thier co-promoter Joesph Malik (Later Blackanized/Compost Records). Together they Created "THE FIRST ECLECTIC URBAN CLUB NITE OF IT'S KIND IN SCOTLAND" playing the Rare Grooves & Breaks & Beats of Soul, Jazz, Funk, Psychedelia, BlueBeat, Roots Reggae, Dub & Disco in the mix with Hip Hop, Hip Hop Soul-Streetsoul, Ragga Hip Hop & the first Jungleist recordings.
Dean was also donating Malcom X samples to his friends; Glasgow Hip Hop Outfit 2 TONE COMMITTEE's - Boze (Later The Sentinales), Sace, Defy Ammoahqwahfoe (The Bench Collective) & thier beathead & turntable sorcerer DJ Smiz aka Krash Slaughta (Krack Free Media/
Monkey Mafia/All Time High), debut 12 inch on 23rd Precint Records "Hung" & beats & kuts to some of thier other track's. He was also performing "4 TURNTABLE SETS" with DJ Smiz as part of thier live shows & INNOVATING MANY SCRATCH PATTERNS & TURNTABLE STYLES Such as: The Helicopter, The PitchFormer, Rips (now known as Tears), Shake's (now known as Tips), Tremor's, Finger Tappin (now known as Taps), Reverse Former (now known as a Flare) & Pitch Juggles etc.......; which many DJ's From London to San Francisco have since been credited with.
Also he was doing many clubnites & events in Edinburgh with Edinburgh's own Pioneer DJ A One of Sugar Bullet/Knightstick/DMC Battle Veteran/
A WunSound/Mo Wax/The Wayfarers: The Big Packback, The Blunt, Phat & Livingston Skatepark Urban Events.
Around this period the "NT" DJs were promoting SOLD OUT one off Hip Hop Nights at THE SUB CLUB, CIRCA & NICE 'N SLEAZY's whilst also running thier "GHETTO MUSIC" nite at THE TUNNEL a more Soul, Jazz, Funk, Hip Hop & Hip Hop Soul-Streetsoul affair & provided Dean with the opportunity to give Rob B of the Stereo MC's a copy of "NT"s demo tape, when they supported the band at The Tunnel. A move which ultimately got "NT" a record deal with RCA & then EPIC RECORDS. They also teamed up with Glasgow Techno Kings SLAM (Soma Records) for a couple of classic one off nights."THE WORM" at THE ARCHES & "DECEND" at "CAFE NOIR", a CRAZY illegal after hours party that started at 3AM, when every club in Glasgow closed & went on til 10AM. With the "NT" DJs upstairs & SLAM in the basement; it was the stuff that legends are made of.
In Mid 90s it was all about the legendary “BLUEPRINT†club nite at the VOLCANO yet another "NT" venture. A club of champions that took the Glasgow clubbing experience to the next level. Heralding many first's in Glasgow Club Culture, musically focusing on Soul, Jazz, Funk, Psychedelick, Hip Hop & Hip Hop Soul-Rhythm N Blues, the club proved as popular with Glasgow's Indie Rock scene as with the Urban Headz & Rare Groove crowd. From "NT's" GROUNDBREAKING 4 TURNTABLE SETS in which Dean PIONEERED & POPULARIZED LIVE REMIXES: a style he'd been dropping since his late 80's battle routine's; that is now known as a MASH UP, to him KUTTING UP OBSCURE BREAKBEATS for the World Champion B BOYS THE FLOOR FREAKS to showcase thier dancefloor skillz; to the SKATER'S with skateboard champion's CLANSKATES, Jeff Fraser's hand built indoor halfpipe. Live turntable & percussion session's with THE BLUEPRINT PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE, UNDER PRESSURE GRAFFITI & PHOTO EXHIBITION with The Legendary Phase 2 (NYC), Vulcan (NYC), Mode 2 of The Chrome Angeles (London) & Derm (Edinburgh), BLUEPRINT BUSES FROM EDINBURGH, BLUEPRINT MAGAZINE, BLUEPRINT SESSIONS MIXTAPE (RCA) Featuring MC MELLO,DJ POGO & DJ A1, Droppin Turntable Science on THE BLUEPRINT RADIO SHOW on Sweet FM, TIM WESTWOOD's RADIO 1 RAP SHOW & all captured in the "NT" EP (RCA) documentary film; that inspired the producers of the film "TRAINSPOTTING" to use the venue for the club scenes in thier movie.
As “PRODUCER & SONGWRITER", Dean producing the majority of the trax on RCA, RESPONSE, EMI & EPIC RECORDS of thier critically acclaimed BREAKS & BEATS PIONEERING OF THE MIGHTY “NT", featuring the incredible soulful vocals of AD; they delivered some of the most forward thinking experimental music to come out of the UK. In Addition to the "NT" EP (RCA) documentary film they followed it up with the classic "NT" Live At The Jazz Cafe, London (EMI/SPIRIT) performance film; as with thier records sought after collectors items. Despite "NT" release's falling short of the Top 40 there unique sounds recieved accolades & sample endorsements across the board from R&B, Hip Hop & Rock 'n Roll LEGENDS like Soul Master CURTIS MAYFIELD & PINK FLOYDS's Psychedelick Innovator SYD BARRET to U2, THE VERVE, EPMDs ERIK SERMON, GANG STARR, DR.OCTAGON'S HANDSOMEBOY GORILLA DAN THE AUTOMATOR, THE BLACK EYED PEAS & BBC Radio 1 DJs such as THE GREAT JOHN PEEL & undying support from GILES PETERSON. Memorably DEAN,KARIM & ITCHY [also a "TS" co-host] threw down a blinding scratch freestyle with Canada's DMC World Champ DJ Dopey producing a heavily scientifik SUB CLUB highlight for the true connisseurs of progressive turntable styles.
