But writing songs has always been a passion.
2008 sees the emerging of a much cherished, beautifully crafted collection – his debut album, “My Precious Lifeâ€. Pieces that feature, not only wonderful musicianship, but a lyricism that is mature, thoughtful and intimate.
The album is a collection of 16 tracks recorded between 2003 and 2006 (that included learning my way around a studio!),and comes from ten years of living and noticing, experiencing and engaging with life artistically in London.
Observing my thoughts and actions, and those of the people close to me, and not so close, has resulted in a collection of songs that has been such a journey to create in the studio, but one that is testament to the old artistic adage of getting up and doing the work! (And then letting it go.)
There was a time when I though I'd love to make an album and let all my lyrical thoughts spill out. The only thing that stopped me was my own head....Ha!
Musically, every song has a different personality and "My Precious Life" moves through different genres with a freedom reminiscent of the music of Sting, John Martyn and Paul Simon.
LIVE…. On the live side, a new band featuring Frederico Portelli (drums/percussion) and Rob Fairweather (bass) is beginning to play the songs from the record but with a jazzier, freer vibe. With Jools on guitar and Rhodes (sometimes simultaneously!)…the sound is classic but with a spirit of adventure!...A chance to entertain and revive a more musical approach to a singer/songwriter show.
Think latin breaks leading into African grooves, following rock twists… all with a strong sense of jazz and soul!
