Sounds Like: South SquadP. Diddy preps for Making the Band 4 Posted Jan 4th 2007 2:32PM by Julia Ward Filed under: Reality, OpEd, Music and Variety, Celebrities, MTVAuditions begin this January 17th in Los Angeles for P. Diddy's latest installment of Making the Band. This time out, he's looking to put together a boy band that crosses New Edition with N'Sync. In Diddy's imagination these boys would be as disciplined as a bunch of Howard men pledging Alpha Phi Alpha, but since, unlike Oprah, he's not taking his base of operations to South Africa or Howard, he's bound to get a bunch of marginally-talented, fame-seeking alpha males whose knowledge of R&B extends back only as far as Boyz II Men if he's lucky.I've actually watched every season, if not every episode, of Making the Band largely because P. Diddy's megalomaniacal behavior has to be seen to be believed. He's like a deeply invasive Donald Trump - doling out business philosophy while telling kids how to sleep, act, breathe, walk, look, etc. You can spare yourself the time investment and just watch Dave Chappelle's take on Diddy from the first season of the Chappelle Show. It's surprisingly accurate. While it may be a blessing in disguise for the artists, Diddy's ego never allows him to see the real talent in the room. Second season's Da Band could not get themselves together in the studio to save their mothers' lives, but when producer Wyclef Jean stepped in for the day, they managed to live up to their collective potential because Wyclef knew what to do with each member's unique talents. P. Diddy's losing strategy in the recording studio included scolding the singer for not being hip-hop enough, scolding the dancehall guy for being the dancehall guy, scolding the hardcore rapper for being too hardcore, etc.The second fumble on Diddy's part was giving Dominique Young the boot in the season three finale. She didn't belong in Danity Kane, but that young woman had a voice that literally moved people to tears. Hopefully, she'll be following the Jennifer Hudson road to post-reality show success. So, if I haven't dissuaded you from seeking a Bad Boy recording contract, here are the casting tour dates for P. Diddy's Making the Band 4:Los Angeles: Knitting Factory, Jan. 17 Houston: Meridian Houston, Jan. 20 Orlando: Club Paris, Jan. 23 Atlanta: Verve Lounge, Jan. 27 Chicago: Club 720, Jan. 30 Detroit: Plan B Nightclub, Feb. 3 New York: The Roxy, Feb. 6
