Demetrus Clark, (DClark) is 25 and from San Antonio, Texas and he feels he has a lot to prove. “I feel as though it’s my duty to show the world that Texas has more to offer than just, Grillz, Lean, Screwed music, and what some may call nursery rhymes. I’m trying to bring my reality, to the Texas music scene, although my reality is largely based behind and from Grillz, Lean, and Screwed Music,†he says with a smile “But I’m also going to give you that man experience that my other Texans don’t give the world.â€
Being spawned from an interracial relationship (His mother was white, and his father African American), was hard enough, but having your mother leave, and your father go to prison on a murder charge makes things that much harder for you. “My grand parents are my parents. They are the reason I’m still here. My mom and Dad got me here but my grand parents kept me here.â€
Influenced by the movement of the Screwed and Chop music scene that was coming from the Houston area. DClark was at one of his friends houses with about 20 other kids the teenagers got their hands on some liquor and instrumentals, and the rest as they say was history. “One of my child hood friends starts to freestyle off of the top of his head, and I’m just sitting there rocking, back and forth. I just started seeing words, form in my head. As I start to see ‘em, I start to speak them, all the while they are rhyming and making sense, and all my friends are going crazy. Up until this point I’m around the age of 13 or 14 I have never even written a poem let alone a rap. This was the first time I ever had something like this happen to me, I’m not even going to lie this talent that I have was overwhelming at first.â€
With that DClark wouldn’t even claim the talent when asked about it he would, flat turn down the notion of it. But as the years would go on, his talent would keep picking at him and picking at him. “It just felt like god kept putting people in my life who would keep encouraging me to purse rap as a career. For instance I met Jamel Johnson, while we were both in the military, who is like my brother now, and all we would do is talk about girls and music. He being from New York, and me from Texas for what ever reason me and him hit it off. One day he heard me freestyle for like 5 or 6 minutes straight and he was like you got that ‘it,’ you should try this music thing, I’m still like yeah okay, what ever you say.â€
As the years went on so did the bond and trust between the two friends. “Jamel was already doing the whole Bxtrordnare Entertainment thing, and I quietly started becoming more and more interested in it not just musically, but the business aspect of it. So, I told him I’m ready, and he told me lets go.†With that the two friends, went to the studio, and recorded DClarks’ first song “Listen I’m a Star/ I’m from Texas Boy.†I went from recording the song, and then playing the song for my friends, to getting club spins, to performing the song and killing it all less then 2 months after recording it. From what I understand that’s unheard of with a first song.â€
With all the right tools it takes to for one to get to the top. The sky is certainly the limit for this “Texas Star†from the Lone Star State.
