Hinemoana Baker

About Me

Hinemoana Baker is a song and spokenword performer with a voice some have compared to Joan Baez and Cleo Laine. She is also a published poet, fiction writer and playwright. Her shows combine all of these aspects and more, and are loved by those who love language - in particular Te Reo Maori (the Maori language) and the impactful, no-waste language of poetry.

'It's a fine wine of a voice...the sort you might buy once in a lifetime, just for a taste of how the other half lives...' (Nelson Evening Mail)

'This was an utterly spellbinding performance.' (Oamaru Mail)

'You have been warned of a major talent.' (four star NZ Herald review)Hinemoana is also one half of folktronica duo 'Taniwha', with sonic artist and rock-pop powerhouse Christine White. Visit Taniwha's myspace page

Band Members:
Hinemoana is a solo artist, performing folk-funk indigenous ballads with the help of an Akai Headrush looping pedal, some traditional Māori instruments and, occasionally, a scuba tank and a bucket of water.

She sometimes performs with her partner, singer-songwriter and alt.pop powerhouse Christine White . As a duo the two often do shows as ' Taniwha ', and specialise in folktronica - simple, acoustic songs set in a sonic art landscape. Their show features an instrument built out of a Black 'n' Decker workbench, with Hinemoana and Christine using a 'cello bow to 'play' household kitchen utensils.

Visual Genie Andrew Dalziel plants his pics in the punters' crockery (with the help of some slender and handsome computer screens) when he and Hinemoana perform their collaborative cabaret. Andrew also mixes the show live - so the sound moves from song to song, from show to show.
