M.E.S What defines a great MC? Is it the flow or the lyrics? Is it the style, charisma, wordplay or delivery? Is it simply, the person? If you take a look around the industry, youll find that every MC has one of these characteristics. So again, what defines a great MC? The person is what defines the MC.- M.E.S Born Marlon Eugene Sims, the second son of James Lee Sims Jr. and Harolyn Sherrell Goode, Marlon came of age on the east side of Baltimore City. At a young age he witnessed the harsh realities of life in the inner city, seeing many things from poverty, to murders, to drug dealing and police brutality. Although many would say that these surroundings arent fit for a child to be raised in; ironically, it was the separation of James and Harolyn that would have the biggest effect. Too young to realize how this would affect his life in the long run, he and his older brother would turn to the streets, as do many young males with the lack of a father figure in the household. By the age of 10, Marlon would be introduced to the world of hip-hop. Such artist as RUN DMC, LL COOL J, KOOL MOE DEE, and RAKIM, would open his eyes to a whole new world. A world where expressing feelings about your surroundings can lead to a life of glamour and fame. Too young to really embrace the essence of hip-hop, it wasnt until 1994s classic ILLMATIC LP by NAS, when he really discovered hip-hop. The poetry and lyrics captured the essence of all the years of struggles that he faced in everyday life. It was as if that album was speaking directly to him. Hip-hop then became a voice for inner city youth to express their feelings and pain. It was a way to share his experiences with other people who may have been going through the same struggles. Knowing that this was nothing short of his destiny, he began to write rhymes and tell his untold stories. His inner feelings were poured onto paper where they stayed. Just as they began on paper, thats where they ended. The drive, the desire, everything was in place. What could possibly be wrong? Confidence!!! The confidence was absent. The drive was there, but somehow he was too uncomfortable with rapping or performing in front of people. But when destiny calls, there is no stopping it. While in a studio listening to his brother record a song, Marlon began to write a verse after catching the beat. With the completed verse in hand, he then handed it to his brother and asked would he mind rapping the verse. Like any true rapper, his brother refused, but it was what his brother said that made it all happen. It is pretty much a sin in hip hop to rap another mans written lyrics, so Jay quickly returned the paper to Marlon and said, If you wrote it, you rap it.I edited my profile at Freeweblayouts.net , check out these Myspace Layouts!
