Chalk Aeroplane was formed out of the friendship of Tom Buckley, Sam Dyson and Jack Mellor. Starting out as just something to do one afternoon at college with Tom and Jack recording a few songs which where written on the spot as they played. A few songs later a gig came up which Tom secured a slot in, so a bass player was needed. After a lot of looking around, and postering, they decided to turn to their friend, and after just a few practices the band had written 5 songs. These where to be first played as part of a college gig at Verve bar in Huddersfield.
From the humble begins the band has played many gigs in and around Huddersfield playing along side many of the areas biggest talents. The trio decided that it was time to record some of their music, which was to be recorded at Manchester Cathedral, recorded and produced by the band themselves. A 10 track album/demo was released in late December and has sold numerous copies at gigs and online so far.
Looking towards the future the band are looking to record some of the newer material, as well as getting more gigs, expanding towards manchester in the near future.
We have:
Tom Buckley: Vocals and Guitar - Claims that his "influences would not fit in a mini"-Why? Cos there are so many of them!We thought we"d test this theory so Tom has attempted to fit all of his influences in a mini:
Tom is in love with Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin and The White Stripes, and you can tell when he"s written the song.
Sam Dyson: Bass and Vocals - Does unspeakable things in coffee ev! Sam has been in many bands, and has many talents, including being one of the best bass players you will hear in a long time. His influcences range from the Jam, to The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and even Toto!
Jack Mellor: Drums - Studies Astrophysics... Some people call him a fish, but we all know Jack as a more than capable (ahem) songwriter, no I mean drummer.
Tom uses (amongst others) an Ibanez , Epiphone Les Paul, and sometimes a Telecaster (if hes lucky!) or a Strat. These are all plugged into either a Line 6 Spider III, Vox or Marshall Amps, or all three! Tom uses a Dunlop Crybaby and Boss Effects Pedals
Sams equipment includes a Rickenbacker 4003, Fender Jazz, and a Custom Bass. Usually using an Ashdown or Peavey head and some mightly Peavey Speaker Cabs.
Jack uses a Pearl Export EXR, with Zildjian Cymbals, Pearl/Yamaha/Tama hardware and Evans G2 Skins (usually!).
The band uses Shure and Samson (drums) mics. With a peavey PA system.
All of the recordings that you can hear are totally recorded and produced by Tom on a MacBook, usually in mono track format, being mixed down to stereo in Cubase or equivalent.
