I will not review “Echoes through the phones” track by track in the right order. There’s no point, just buy the damn record yourself. You really should. I’ve been listening to it for several weeks now, which gives me an overview. This is a very solid, ambitious album that you won’t outgrow. The overall sound is massive most of the time. It is also a little bit dirty, but in a classy way: this is a deliberate production choice which turns out very coherent through the almost 50 minutes this eight-track record lasts. Yes, the songs are pretty long. And if it’s too long, then you’re too young. You should just go back to half-written three minute songs with hardly a melody that you dig and not give a fuck about Waterfalls. Fair enough. Now if you’re a little bit more into rock’n’roll that matters to your guts and your heart, you won’t stop there. First of all, you should know that Waterfalls is only one guy. Playing every instrument. Some might find that very impressive, some might think having a whole band adds to the magic of the songs. Whatever. What is important is the alchemy. This record has it. This guy and his several selves play in perfect harmony. There are two tunes that aim high. The first one, and the last one: “Come in fast”, and “All I can”. They are both epic songs that do have the grounds to last that long. Their structure might not be very complicated, but the progression is very enjoyable. So are the guitars. “Cotton mouth is love” might be the most poppish song here. The melody stays in your head, but even better, the harmonies between chords and melody are strikingly better when you hear them on the record than in your memory. That’s always a good sign. Great use of backing vocals too. If I had to choose a favourite song, I’d go back and forth between two of them. First, “Bring you back home”, the hidden track. It’s acoustic, and it probably doesn’t reflect the rest of the record. But if it did, it would be the obvious highlight. The melody is genuinely brilliant. The tempo is slow but nobody is in a rush when hearing stuff like that. This could be a very old folk song, only with a modern sound. When you manage to embellish the spirit of the origins of folk, blues and rock’n’roll with a clear, tasty sound, then you’ve pretty much said it all. Oh, and there’s a harmonica. Of course. My second choice, which makes more sense to the extent it gathers the main characteristics of the whole album, would be “Pretty cool for a Parisian”. This tune makes it for me. It just gives you intense musical pleasure. But at the same time, it’s not a heavy thing. I would say it both has the lightness of pop music and the energy of a rock’n’roll song. Because, yes, the guitars sound awesome on this one. The song could be compared with a two or three staged rocket. When you think the missile has been launched, there’s always one more to be triggered. It reminds me of that Springsteen line: “Kids flash guitars just like switch blades”. That is what it is. But there’s no anger or anything in this, just the enjoyment of making noise, which I think is what I hear with the voice rising over the wall of sound singing “Reeeeevooooolution I feel fine”. Fire the guitars.
