About Me

Sjan Aron means "old songs" in Irish but we have spelt it phonetically in Icelandic, since it's there that we first performed. We play songs,as you might have guessed, that are old. Some from the renaisance and pre-baroque eras and some modern arrangments of traditional songs from different cultures Some notes on the songs(if anybody is interested) "Hey Ho to the Greenwood" is by a 15th century English composer called William Byrd. After an improvised introduction (played by guitar and bass clarinet) it becomes a canon in 3 parts which we eventually expand into something new. "Dirge" is from a song cycle by contemporary American composer Domnick Argento, based on texts written by William Shakespeare. This is our own arrangment, but some elements of the original piano part remain intact and are shared between the clarinet and violin.Everybody loves chimes, don't they? "The Last Rose of Summer" is an old Irish folk song. This is our adaptation of an arrangment by Benjamin Britten from "Moore's Irish Melodies"
