..A self-taught musician since the age of 12, B.S. Lees developed an interest in experimenting with the world of sound from very early on as a means to capture the world around him and create "sound paintings" with a palette of auditory soundscapes. Inspired by the breathtaking scenery in and around his home in San Diego, CA., B.S. Lees set forth to record those sound paintings for others to hear and enjoy. In the 1990s, he composed many such pieces which were later recorded in an analogue tape format, culminating in three full-length productions which were later converted to CD format: "Music for a Thursday Afternoon" (1996), "Anthems for a Soulmate" (1997), and "Music for a Weekend Getaway" (1998). His first direct to digital CD recording featured a fresh palette of synth sounds and painstakingly crafted drum patterns with unique voicings, all of which became 1999's "The Elements." Next followed a foray into experimentation with ethnic instruments from around the world juxtaposed against the framework of cutting edge synth sounds and drum machine patterns, which was the foundation of 2002's "Extinct Languages." After a brief pause, it was back to the studio for the eerie ambient space music and downtempo grooves of 2003's "Requiem for a Lost Love," which chronicled the 2001 demise of a two year romantic relationship. In 2005, amid a lot of newfound optimistic confidence from much self-reflecting and the joy of a new relationship, B.S. Lees recorded the very pop/rock oriented "A Book Without Pages," which is much like a storybook of wordless songs, and featured more live guitar and bass riffs than any other of his work thus far. In 2007, his fifth CD, titled "The Light At the End of the Tunnel," was recorded and saw him drift further away from his diversified synth palette and more into textured and experimental heavily-effected guitar ("shoegazer" style, ala Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine), while still retaining some of the synth sensibilities and ambience of previous works. Sometimes dark and brooding and introspective, other times hopeful and adventurous and reflective, it is his most aggressively original work to date, inspired by the depth of self-realization that came about after yet another relationship which started out so joyously and ended so painfully. The year 2009 will see him explore still more new sonic textures and palettes to create new works with more of a spiritual feel to them. The sixth CD, titled "Amber Dawn," is due to be completed in August, and is a return to synthesized ambient sounds and trance rhythms.
