About Me

Heather Maxwell is bandleader and singer/songwriter for the Heather Maxwell Band, and the lead vocalist for Inner Rhythm, a world jaz/soul band led by renowned drummer, Robert Jospe. Maxwell’s voice is rich and earthy. She sings in English, French, Portugese and several African languages. World Music, AfroPop, Jazz, R&B, and Rock; the various blends and mixes of these genres resonate in each of her songs.Originally from Flint, Michigan, Ms. Maxwell went from singing in churches with her family gospel band to singing in West African villages with native folk and Afropop bands. She performs and collaborates with some of Africa's biggest stars today such as Oumou Sangare, Salif Keita, Neba Solo, Vusi Mahlasela, and Habib Koite. She also plays traditional African guitar (kamalen n'goni) and marimba (balafon). Instrumentation: electric bass, drum kit, percussion, guitar/keys, balafon, kamalen n'goni, vocals and dancers.Maxwell’s solo albums: Keneya Ji (Samassa 1990), Mali-West Africa. Pygmee (EMI 1991), Abidjan, Ivory Coat. Afrika Soul is anticipated for the fall of 2008. Featured Vocalist on: Heartbeat (Random Chance 2006) New York, NY. With Robert Jospé.Heather Maxwell is also a teacher and Arts Consultant specializing in African and World music productions.
