About Me

About me...
No one's ever heard my songs before. I've never played out with them. I'm not the guy you'll see at a show or on the street playing for anyone. Writing songs like this is just something I do when I'm alone and wondering why the hell we're here. I sing into my laptop mic. I dump the songs on my ipod, and when I'm walking my dog, or driving a long way, or sitting up late at night alone I'll listen to them.
About Wake...
I was in Chicago, waiting for the El. I'd been walking in the rain earlier. Not because I like to walk in the rain. I'd gotten stuck in the rain and eventually stopped hurrying since it was warm enough outside. As I waited on the outdoor El platform, and the rain began to dissipate, and the sky began to open up again, I had one of those moments that come very infrequently for me in life where I felt completely present, fully alive, and fully here. It was as if I was on the verge of peering into some great mystery and actually being able to understand it. I stood at the edge of the tracks and just got caught up in the world and the sky. That feeling encompassed me on the El and all the way home where I wrote Wake and sang it into my video camera.
About Evolve...
Evolve is meant to bleed right into the song Wake.
About Ben's Song...
Ben majored with me in undergrad. The last time I saw Ben, I went to see him in a hospital in New York where he was in the last stages of AIDS and suffering from advanced cancer of the lymph nodes. He ate soup with a spoon and had trouble swallowing. Even though he had very little physical strength, when we said goodbye he hugged me with an intensity I'd never felt before and have never felt since. He really wanted to stay here but he wasnt going to be allowed. We spread Ben's ashes at the base of a tree outside a Broadway theater where he once worked on a show. His ashes were very soft to the touch.
Ben's Song was recorded when I was in Brooklyn sitting in my old brownstone on a radiator next to an open window during a thunderstorm. I waited for thunder to start and pressed record and played the song.

WAKE LYRICS

My feet leap to the air
I'm falling now so carelessly
My seafaring days drift behind me now
Sweet bliss from mutiny
My feet kick in the wake

I fantasize in the womb of creation
I fantasize and recede
I swallow whole and breathe in the nectar
Of mother nature
Mother sea

I slip deep into space
See the face of God stare into the face of me
Drowned deep down is the questioning
Now only is, is not, is not necessary
My feet kick in the wake

Stars above me, stars below me
Stars surround me
As I fantasize in the womb of creation
I fantasize and receive
I'm swallowed whole by the beauty of the equation
Of farther nature
Mother space

Drowned deep down is the questioning
Now only is, is not
Is not music, is not thought
Is not fingers, is not work
Is not music
Is not song

EVOLVE LYRICS

Evolve
It's no secret world, it's bright and screaming out
Kill fear, release and be, I tell myself
This is life, it's happening now
Love, I want to love again

We stalk the future to control the past
We reach the present, our hands are grasping for the present
But the present's already gasping for some breath of air
Waiting for your lips to fill its lungs
But the future comes

Lay hold of these memories
We are here now, we are here now
Behold, life the fantasy
Behold our only waking hours
And will I remember being here

We stalk the future to control the past
We reach the present, our hands are grasping for the present
But the present's already gasping for some breath of air
Waiting for your lips to fill its lungs
But the future comes, alive
Like the infant's eyes reflect fluorescent light
Become alive, like the old man jerks his drooping head from sleep

As the centuries draw to a close
Will you believe in me
As the millennium starts to unfold
Will you believe in me
If I could make the sky burst open
Would you believe in me
I'm like you, I'm only human
Will you believe in me

And what have we become
Every single day we become
And to what do we belong
To be standing here alive

Take me down to the water, lead my soul
Take me down to the water and we will kneel
Until the time arrives to unhouse this soul
What were meant to do is find the real

If only for a moment
And then it's gone
