I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, in a typical middle class home. Both of my parents worked. They were good moral people; however, they were not religious. We only attended church on Christmas and Easter. During one service when I was 8, I went down the isle and was baptized, but at that time I had no idea what I was doing. The only reason I went forward was because my older brother went.I grew to be an average teen. I played a little football and studied just enough to survive. I had heard the gospel several times in church, but it never really had an impact on me until the eighth grade. There was a girl in my class who seemed to have her life all together. She always made straight A’s and was involved in band. I asked her how she did it. She said it was with the help of the Lord Jesus Christ and shared with me her testimony. From that time forward, my spiritual interest began to grow.Later, when I was a senior in high school I was invited to church by a girl friend. It was there that I discovered several people I knew from school who were active in the youth group. I kept coming. After my first visit, the Youth Pastor came by my house and for the second time in my life someone shared Christ with me. I didn’t receive Christ at that time, though. After graduating high school, I kept attending. Then on the last Sunday in December of 1978, I sat in the balcony of Shades Mountain Independent Church and listened to the pastor preach on I John 5:13 “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.†The title of his message was “How to know that you know that you know you’re saved?†After listening to that message, the only thing I knew was that I wasn’t going to heaven. The Pastor invited those who wanted to receive Christ to come down front for more information. I responded to the invitation and one of the associate pastors, Drew Ramsay, sat down with me on the second pew and went through “The Four Spiritual Laws.†I bowed my head and, from my heart, I asked Jesus to come into my life, forgive my sins, and be my Savior.
