When DJ Tek (a.k.a. Conor O’ Riordan) isn’t hammering out the soundtrack to one wild session after another, he’s a producer, promoter and pacesetter based in Cork, Ireland. Deciding early in his career that the mountain must come to Mohammad, he’s become a figurehead of Cork’s techno scene, reimagining, revitalizing and reconstructing it to suit his own particular brand of relentless electronic fuckery. In eight short years he’s brought his wicked take on techno from local pub residencies to supporting some of the biggest names in dance, from rural raves to headlined gigs in Ireland and France. He’s made his home in Cork with Kommunity, the toughest clubnight you’ll ever have the pleasure of getting tinnitus from, his brainchild and the result of his love for music and inability to sit still. And as resident at Inferno, Kommunity’s sister night, he segues into a stunning take on tech-trance that’s the perfect antidote to the easy, cheesy sound so epidemic in today’s scene.
From a bedroom DJ forging ties to local heroes, to supporting, booking and impressing demi-gods like Eric Sneo, Steve Lawler, the Liberators, Billy Nasty, Tall Paul and D.A.V.E. the Drummer, Tek has undeniably made his mark even in the fluid and innovative world of dance music. He’s played in the UK, France and Italy, and has lined up Audio Assault gigs in The Netherlands and Serbia for the near future. Despite his globetrotting, it might be suggested in his tireless commitment to promoting local talent and enticing underground legends to give Guinness a go that Tek’s heart is in Ireland – the Kommunity faithful can look forward to Bas Mooy’s Irish debut this February, while local charities have a powerful weapon in Tek’s silvertongued ability to convince ravers to part with their cash for a good cause. Even festival organizing isn’t too daunting a prospect, as those who enjoyed Lost In Lisgoold and a Midsummer’s Night’s Dream can testify. And if that wasn’t enough to ensure Tek’s nomination in any Workaholic 2008 competition, he’s busy on production projects with the likes of Alex Calver.
How does he find time for it all? By being utterly committed to infecting the masses with the same passion for dark and dirty beats he himself has surrendered to. And with countrywide bookings and his slant on techno broadcasted on stations like 2fm, Techno fm, and Irish underground heavyweights Tech fm and Inferno fm, chances are if you’re not tekkin’ him out yet, you will be soon.
