Illyus Brown has secured a place alongside the heavy hitters of the elite DJ club scene. Not only has he established himself as a yearly resident at T in the Park, Brown is also the front man at Glasgow’s Karbon nightclub and most recently has taken his unique beats to clubs in Dubai and Europe.Iron Ill (his DJ alter ego) has performed at some of music’s top aftershow parties, including Kano, 50 Cent, John Legend and the one and only Nas. He has also worked with some of the best DJ’s in the business - Jazzy Jeff, Punjabi Mc, DJ Kofi to name but a few.His mission – to set the club world alight with the sound of his unique beats – Just as Tony Stark became Iron Man, when the sun sets and the crowds begin to form, Illyus Brown becomes ‘Iron Ill’ DJ extraordinaire. The Glasgow DJ has fans and music insiders buzzing with what they hear and what is yet to come from the young Scot; including leading club magazine M8, who recently featured him in a two-page spread. With a club following that’s taken him around the globe, Illyus describes his sound as hip hop inspired but through the art of turntablism he also experiments frequently with other genres.“Scratching, doubling up and using skits are a few things I use in my set.â€â€œIf I had to describe my style I’d say - always on the move, multi-tasking and being original - that’s definitely what I’m all about.â€Spending his younger years in Germany, Illyus began honing his music skills from the tender age of 9, when a leg injury forced him to swap his football boots for a drum kit and a ghetto blaster.“I had to find another way of keeping myself busy, so one day at this youth club I started to play the drums.â€â€œI taught myself, doing all sorts of drum patterns and even performed a couple of times. My love of hip-hop came from my mate who brought me a mix-tape to listen to. On it was Outkast’s track, ATLiens - there was something about it that stuck out for me.â€Although hip-hop has been a major influence for the DJ, he often mixes it up with funky breakdowns, drum patterns and leans on his love of different music genres to bring his creations to life on the dancefloor.Collaborations like his own spin on some of r ‘n’ b and hip hop’s top tunes, including his famous mash up of Lil’ Wayne’s, ‘a milli’ - which uses 80’s group soft cell’s ‘tainted love’ as the backing track - has ensured Iron Ill’s sound stands out from the rest.On his return to the UK, Ill went from barman to starman. Working, watching and learning from those around him, he injected himself into the music scene working as a barman and stand-in DJ at Glasgow’s Trash nightclub. However in a sick twist of fate, Trash would burn to the ground and with it, Illyus’s bright start on the DJ circuit.
Bitten by the bug and determined not to let his dreams of being a DJ fizzle in the ashes of the nightclub, Illyus dusted himself off and entered Beat 106 Smirnoff Dj competition as well as Miller's ‘You Wana Be A DJ’ competition in 2005.In both competitions judges such as House DJ’s Stevie Sole, Geoff M (Beat 106) and Urban Dj's such as Naeem, Ray Woods and Kash (Miller) agreed the young DJ stood out from the crowd throughout the long weekly process of the competitions with his unique skills on the decks, declaring Illyus the winner and securing him a regular spots at the city’s Bamboo and Blanket nightclub.Momentum for the DJ quickly grew, and catching the eye of DJ Naeem, Cutz and Kash -established masters on the Glasgow scene and guys DJ Iron Ill credits and looks to for inspiration and guidance – led to the creation of the G Town 3, which consists of Iron Ill, Naeem and DJ Kash. For the past year and a half Iron Ill and his dynamic duo have worked to create unique nights, mix tapes and remixes with great success and accreditation by music insiders and music fans alike. As for the future, Illyus continues to work in top clubs and festivals around the globe while producing works for homegrown talent likes of MTV’s Britain’s Next Urban Superstar’s Miss Elli, Kobi Onyame (formally Jae P), Koncrete Beats and a few other hidden gems. Iron ill's Remixes are definatly another something to look out for, tracks like Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas and Britney's You seek amy have been turned into new club smash hits by this talented individual. One thing’s for sure, DJ Iron Ill has come from the bottom and risen from the ashes (literally) to become a force to be reckoned with on the music, club and soon to be production scene.
