About Me

So how did I get to where I am today music wise? First music I can remember loving was the whole 2-Tone thing in Primary school (79-80), we all had mini docs, turned up jeans, black harringtons with button badges all the way down the left hand side, my mum wouldn't let me have a crop though...well, I was only 10 and it wasn't the done thing then. The Jam were next followed by The Style Council who turned me onto the whole 'mod' thing properly, soul and blues etc ...didn't get the jazz thing back then though. Other bands that affected me back then were The Prisoners, The Jetset and The Times. T'was only a matter of time before tastes changed though and although I carried on with a liking of soul, punk became more my thing towards the end of the eighties - fast yankee 'straight edge' style punk to be precise. This eventually led me to Oi! and inevitably finally cropping my hair, wearing shiny 8 eyelet oxblood docs, jeans with 3/4" pressed turn ups and vintage Brutus and Ben Sherman shirts. Reggae became a major love and when the hair started growing longer I was turned on to hip hop and especially jazz and funk flavoured hip hop. 'Rediscovered' Weller around 94 aswell and stuff on Acid Jazz, especially JTQ.
And now in 2006 I've come pretty much full circle (apart from wearing a boating blazer and bowling shoes of course), listening to all things 'mod'....soul, funk, blues, jazz, reggae, garage (as in punk not that awful electro dirge), etc etc...the only mod type stuff I'm not really diggin' now is 79 revival stuff...it's a bit tired now and doesn't sound so good. I'll listen to almost anything and everything now and just enjoy it for what it is though.
Oh, and finally, where do I stand on this whole 'The Jam' reunion without weller? Well, some things are best left in 1982 eh?

My Interests

I like dry stone walling, hurling rabbits, shredding paper, collecting dynamite, skimming stones and stroking kittens. I also like eating good food, drinking fine wines, crisp tasty Euro lager bier, gin and tonic. I also like playing acoustic guitar rather badly and clothes shopping, mountain walking, beaches and getting away with doing as little as possible.

I'd like to meet:

My dad....he died in 1979 when I was a mere slip of a lad

Music:

Paul Weller, The Jam (77-82), The Style Council, The Who, Small Faces, Soul (mod, northern and stax etc), JTQ, The Prisoners, The Jetset, The Times, These Animal Men, Big Boss Man, Stoned Soul Picnic, The Enemy, Little Man Tate, the AM's, Cockney Rejects, Angelic Upstarts, Otis Redding, Stax/Volt/Sue - The definitive soul label, The New Mastersounds, Massive Attack, Portishead, Oasis, Acid Jazz/Hammond funk, bit of Punk/Oi!/Hardcore, bit of hip hop (decent stuff though, not this chart shite), bit of chill out, bit of acoustic folky stuff like Nick Drake, John Martyn and Neil Young etc, Thee Mighty Caesars, The Prime Movers, Beastie Boys, The Birds, The Eyes, The Creation, Dirty 70's funk, Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses, Kasabian, The Chords, Gene Drayton Unit, The Link Quartet, The Upsetters, Toots and the Maytals........boss skinhead reggae, The Specials, Fila Brazilia, The Go! Team, Buzzcocks, Redskins, Noonday Underground, Candie Payne, Thee Milkshakes, Solarflares, Frank Popp Ensemble.............I could go on for hours!

Movies:

Not really a big fan of films, but do love The Good, The Bad And The Ugly.

Television:

Not really unless it's informative. Can't stand watching sports etc...what a waste of time...go out there and play the game rather than watch it!

Books:

Mods - Richard Barnes, a classic photobook of those few years in the early 60's when a whole phenomenon of style changed youth culture for ever. Just read Awaydays by Kevin Sampson, excellent book - first novel I've read in years that I enjoyed, great realistic and gripping literature.

Heroes:

In the immortal words of one John Lydon - "I haven't got any heroes, they're all useless!". Wise words John, wise words. Except maybe a few unknown people who do genuinely heroic things maybe? You know, people who do something special rather than just somebody who is famous.

My Blog

first entry

blah - that's about the most interesting thing i've got to say at the moment!
