Got some questions??? We got some answers!
FAQs:
***What is the Unlabel?
Milkboy the Unlabel was established to help musicians advance themselves in the rapidly changing and very confusing new music landscape. We have seen many artists come into the studio really pour their heart into their project, only to realize that the studio is just the beginning. Once the artist has their finished product, there is a huge amount of work necessary to get the album into the hands of eager fans. Graphic design, duplication, distribution, promotion, airplay, licensing, booking, taxes, and endless self promotion all need to come together seamlessly in order to successfully launch an album. Normally, this is what a Record Label is for. Normally, a Record Label will take 85% of YOUR PROFIT!!! Who wants that??!
The music industry is set up now to benefit the independent, do-it-yourself artist. The only things an independant artist needs now are resources and contacts.
We set up Milkboy the Unlabel to pool all of our trusted resources together and offer them as a service so that we can give the Independent Artist a boost in their career. We only ask a small fee upfront for these services. We take no percentage. Everything is yours. We offer all of the benefits of a label, with none of the commitment or loss of revenue.
***Why do you want to help?
We love music, especially artists who can be independent and do it on their own terms. We record great music and love being involved with talented artists. There are a lot of artists out there that need just a little bit of help to break them into the scene. We have the resources, and you have the talent, so why don't we get together?
***Can you sign me?
No, we do not sign artists. We believe that artists should remain independent, and become their own business, operating entirely on their own. We can show you how to do that!
***Are you going to try to groom me and turn me into a mega pop group?
We don't groom. That is something you do at home... We just help and give advice when asked. If you want to be a mega pop group, we can help you do that, or if you want to just be a singer songwriter, we can do that too.
***What is Graphic Management?

A lot of artists already have in mind what they want their artwork to look like on their album. What they need help with is getting it into the computer, into the right formats, and making sure it will always appear correctly in different programs. Basically, we make sure everything is correct and up to industry standard. Also, some artists have absolutely no graphics or logo at all, and wish to get some stuff together. We do all of that.
***What are ASCAP and BMI? Why do I need them?

They are basically musicians unions. You only need one, but you absolutely must have one. If you want to get paid when your music airs on the radio, you better be sure that you are signed up with one of these guys...
***Will you put my song in a movie?

We do not place songs in movies, but we can increase your odds in getting your work placed in a movie or TV show.
***Will you get me lots of gigs and put me on a world tour?

We can help you get gigs and increase your odds on getting on that world tour, but we do not actually place you on the bills. That is up to the booking agents at the venues to decide. We will help you put together a package that will catch their attention.
***Web Management? I already have a website and myspace!

Don't worry about that. Odds are you are not yet getting the most out of your web portals. We have a bunch of tools that can move more traffic to your sites and make sure that your traffic keeps coming back. We will also advise you on how to keep everything neat and manageable. If you want them coming back, its got to have good content, and it must load quickly!
***Will you be my distributor?

The independent artist must always have options. You do not need exclusive distribution, but you do need someone to do it for you. We work with several distribution companies and retailers, including iTunes and Rhapsody, and will set up our clients with the proper ones.
***Why should I spend my money on something that I can do on my own?

-Because we have the experience and connections already set up. On your own, it can take you many costly years to build up the amount of resources that we have. We know who is reliable, and who can get you results. We help you put your money and time where it counts.
***Why do I need a session coordinator? I do not want someone babysitting us while we work!

The Session Coordinator takes care of your budgeting, both with time and money. If you are on a limited budget, he will make sure you get the most out of your experience. The Session Coordinator will help you get a scope on your project, and keep it under your control, making sure you stick to goals and deadlines established prior to entering into the studio. Time can travels quickly while recording, and the Session Coordinator will make sure your work gets completed to your satisfaction.
***Are there any other fees associated within the different levels?

The Unlabel deals with many companies and vendors that do and do not charge a fee for their services. It is up to the artist to decide which avenue he wishes to take. There are free options as well as paying options, it just depends how far you would like to take your project.

Real, live Mermaids

And where, you wonder, can one see a mermaid on the East Coast? I saw them last night on a spontaneous trip to NYC. Ok, it was in an aquatic-themed bar that featured a giant fishtank - my buddy Geor...
