My name is Colin and I live in Glasgow. I own the company “Foghorn Film†and specialise in filmmaking and web design. I first got the spark of making films when I was 12 as my friend, Colin McCabe, and I made our first animation. It was pretty poor, but it was the start of something. After that we made several attempts to do more animation and improve but it wasn’t until 5 years later that we really started again. We showed improvement in our animation techniques, however we were unable to complete this short.
When I left school I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I had applied for PE teaching at school, but failed to get in due to my poor academic performance. It was in my 6th year at school I started becoming interested in web design and learning about this new thing called The Internet. I had no internet access at home, but armed with Photoshop and notepad I started making websites. Over the years I have become a self taught web designer learning by Tutorials, observations and trial and error experimentation.
After school I decided to attend Cardonald College to continue my Highers, but again had no real ambition in pursuing them, except for one subject…Media Studies. It slowly came to me throughout the year that my interest was in movies and I would like to take a bash at learning how to make short films and TV programs. Before I started the TV course I taught myself editing on the PC by making fan made movie trailers. And then in the following year I entered the TV Course at Cardonald and spent the next three years learning the fundamentals of making a film/TV program.
When I left college I got involved with some like minded individuals who had just left college as well and were making their own short films. I made several contacts from this community that came in handy over the following year when making my first short film, i.e. the actors involved (Ross Maxwell, Jim Sweeney and Ceejay Watt) as well as various other peeps (Layla, Stiv, Mike, Kyrie). I had also been making contact with online associates since going online. The two most important people I met online that helped contribute to my first short film, Darkness, was TJ Jeffrey (Director of Photography) and Justin R. Durban (Composer). My friend, Steven McKenzie, whom I met whilst working in Big W, joined the force for Darkness as well as two excellent Make-Up Girls Lisa and Fiona. Darkness is embedded in me MySpace page so have a gander if you like. It was based on a short story by a mate (Scott Reilly) of a mate (Michael Dott) in school and had taken me several years to get made.
I am currently in post production of two short films, The Hitchhiker and Sandwich. The former a story about a lonesome Hitchhiker on the trailer of his girlfriend who has gone missing in the Scottish countryside, and the latter a story of an ex-gangster on the trail of revenge after two of his boys are viciously attacked on the streets of Glasgow. With various projects in the pipeline I work towards making these films whilst working at Woolworths in Glasgow to earn the pennies. Yep, it’s not easy being an Indie film-maker :-)
