As a child, I was supposedly mildly retarded. My parents illegally had me subjected to genetic engineering, with the goal of making me not only "normal", but "superior". The procedure worked, though an entirely new person was born (at least as far as I was concerned). Widespread fear of genetic engineering throughout the Federation had led to genetic enhancement becoming illegal and the confining of all genetically enhanced individuals. I kept my procedure a secret throughout most of my life.
I finished second at Starfleet Medical, although I purposely missed a question on my final exam in hopes of hiding my genetic alterations. I was then given my choice assignment on the former Cardassian space station, Terok Nor, renamed Deep Space Nine, giving me the opportunity to practice "frontier medicine." I was one of the few crew members assigned to the station that was initially happy to be there. At first my overly enthusiastic, self-important nature made me disliked but I eventually became dear friends with much of the crew, especially Miles O'Brien, Jadzia Dax, and Elim Garak.
My genetically-engineered status was accidentally revealed by my parents. Once my secret was discovered I offered to resign my commission. My parents, unwilling to see their son's career ruined, went to Captain Benjamin Sisko and told him everything. When I arrived to give up my commission, I was informed that my father had agreed to serve two years in prison on the condition that I would be allowed to keep my commission and medical practice. Since then, I has been treated somewhat differently. For example, Miles made me stand much further back from the dart board during our games.
