Alpha Gamma Lambda (AGL) is the oldest graduate chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in New York City, and the second oldest graduate chapter in New York State (The 1st state of Alpha). We were founded on December 23, 1926.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated is the first intercollegiate fraternity for African-American men. It was founded on Tuesday, December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The founders, known as "Jewels" were Dr. Henry A. Callis, Charles H. Chapman, Eugene K. Jones, George B. Kelly, Nathaniel A. Murray, Robert H. Ogle and Vertner W. Tandy. Over 150,000 men have been initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity since its founding in 1906. It has been interracial since 1945. The Fraternity is international with local chapters throughout the United States, the District of Columbia, the West Indies, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Virgin Islands.
The objective of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is to stimulate the ambition of its members; to prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the causes of humanity, freedom and dignity of the individual; to encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood; and to aid downtrodden humanity in its efforts to achieve social, economic and intellectual status.
