Vox Von Braun

About Me

Vox von Braun plays the kind of music that should come out of the transistor radio of two peroxide-blondes, driving a convertible in any of your favourite mid-seventies road movies. The band was founded in 2004 by Wymer Vaatstra (ex-the Gluemen) and Frank Hiep (Propeller). Soon afterwards they asked Maike Doornebosch to play bass. After recording their first EP, Lord of Pesetas (2005), drummer Janwillem van der Veen joined the band and they started doing more gigs.
Early shows were characterized by lots of noise, creating a sound reminiscent of shoegaze and 60's punk rock. Later gigs brought more balance between popsongs and modern, noisy alienation. Influences stretch from the Other Half to My Bloody Valentine and from Lee Hazlewood to Stephen Malkmus. You might have seen them play at Vera Groningen (supporting The Rifles, November 2006), doing showcases in (among others) Amsterdam, Leeuwarden and The Hague, or at Eurosonic 2007. Early 2007 two new songs were released on a split 7" single with former De Nieuwe Vrolijkheid.
As a three-headed combo (Frank Hiep left the band in the summer of 2007), the band travelled overseas to the British Isles in September 2007 with Tall Poppies friends Hallo Venray, Appie Kim and the Sugarettes. They were invited by Incendiary Magazine & Subroutine Records to play at some fancy clubs and sleazy pubs. Visit the tallpoppiestour . A big party was thrown in VERA in October to celebrate their safe homecoming.
From March 2008 the band is accompanied by fourth member Ben Wennekers on guitar and organ, making their poppy feedback sound more gritty and playful than ever. Their forthcoming debut album is to be released in the fall of 2008 (Subroutine Records).

"One of the things we love about Vox Von Braun is the playful approach they take in recognizing their varied and semi-retro influences while maintaining a unique, strong sound that stands more than well enough on its own."

“They rock me and I dance unapologetically to their grooves. They make me feel like I'm participating in another era of music... a time when it mattered what you did and what you created. Vox Von Braun completes my evening's therapy with a resounding sonic exclamation mark.”
