BIO
Mick McHugh is an independent contemporary Irish singer-songwriter and a captivating performer who draws in audiences with songs and stories.
In his live performances he has the ability to arouse the crowd in with his catchy tunes such as ‘Addicted’, ‘Let’s Dance’ and the ‘Do Do Song’. Conversely he can create a highly emotive atmosphere with moving songs such as ‘Dad’, ‘What is a Man’ and ‘Thank You’.
Mick released his debut EP in 2008. The title track “A Long Way From Home†was immediately shortlisted in the 2008 Australian Songwriters Association Contest. Using lamenting Irish instruments, Mick sings of emigrating with his family from Ireland to Oz, of love ability to find us all, a protest song and his love for Caramel Slices! The CD features top notch musicians who, incidentally, also recorded on Pete Murray’s latest CD.
In 2008, Mick McHugh also released his follow up CD, “Dadâ€. This was in conjunction with his performances at The Fatherhood Festival, where he supported Australian Idol winner Damien Leith and Australian music icons Jeff Lang and Tex Perkins. Using a professional home studio in order to capture an intimate performance, cradled by cello and piano, the CD touches on deep issues of fatherhood, manhood, break-ups, and dreams. One of the tracks, "A Million Stars" has been short listed both nationally and regionally for Lyrics. This song is helping to raise finances and awareness for Backpacks 4 Aussie Kids
With eight short listing in song contest since turning professional two years ago, his third CD, a live recording, due out early 2010, and recently receiving high praise and support for his performances from ABC radio and community radios, Mick McHugh is paving himself a lasting career in the music industry offering listeners classic story telling, with a fresh flare.
As well as regular gigs, Mick actively participates in community projects. In 2008, he played fund raising gigs for Harmony Day in Byron Bay, Mental Health Acceptance week, Federal pre-school, rural Fire Services and performed at Brisbane's inaugural Green Fest. He has created a new monthly Folk Night in Federal, which donates 10% to community projects. One of Mick's songs is featured on an Irish compilation CD to help raise funds for an orphanage for displaced Tibetan children in Nepal.
Mick delivers his songs with a passion, reminiscent of the Irish Balladeers of old, but with a distinct contemporary flavour of a young man who wears his heart on his sleeve.
