It’s summer 2008 and this tune is constantly blaring from every radio station, car or cell phone withinearshot…”Yay eh! The way you look, the way you move, the way you talk…” sets the tone for the song.What song is that you may ask? Who is that artist? The world would soon come to find out as did VirginIslanders that its one of their own; the young but musically versatile IYAZ. Born in St Thomas aka“Rock City” but grew up in Tortola He sings his irresistible, unavoidable tropical tale of enchantmentand love; “Island Girls”. When speaking with him he speaks of growing up surrounded by music from avery early age. His mother being a church choir director and his father a member of a male gospelsinging group the young IYAZ would soon develop a love and passion for music as did his siblings twosisters. Iyaz grew up being exposed to various types of music, from gospel to reggae, but latergravitated towards Rap and R&B. He has a love for not only singing and recording but also writing songsnot only himself but for others. In spring of 2008 I.Y.A.Z connected with young pop star Sean Kingstonthrough MySpace. Kingston saw the young singer as a talent hungry for success like himself and not onlyinitiated contact. “I was shocked when I saw a message in my inbox saying Sean Kingston” says the youngartist “I was like yeah right!” and he laughed. And after a few meetings and the exchanging of trackswith each other, Sean signed I.Y.A.Z as the first artist for his new label, T.I.M.E “Time Is MoneyEntertainment…” “It’s something I wanted to do since I was young,” he pauses briefly before concluding.“I know my mum is proud.” I.Y.A.Z's music blends rap, reggae, pop, and doo-wop, to which the presidentof Sony records Charlie Walk and the A&R Brandon kreed refers to as “Ear candy”. He writes or co-writesall of his songs. I.Y.A.Z is distinctive from most other hip hop artists by trying at best to keep thelanguage of his music absent of profanity. He’s been privileged to work major artists including SEANKINGSTON. Also producer “J.R” Rotem who produced hit songs like “SoS” by Rihanna, “Beautiful Girls” bySean Kingston and “Buss it Baby” by Plies. When contemplating his future he speaks of hoping toeventually become involved in the business side of music; in addition, he also hopes work with a lot ofthe other major artist’s that are out there. His Goal is to become successful in the music industry andbe able to give the world a taste of the British Virgin Islands and what it has to offer, by means ofhis island hop style music.
