They want to change your perception of what hot is, one rhyme at a time.
Like a twisted version of the telephone game Hip Hop has split into two factions, Mainstream and Underground. Mainstream is exactly what it sounds like it would be. This is the music that even the passing fan of Hip-Hop could identify and have a tendency to focus on the party vibe. The result is a lot of boring records about money, sex and drugs over dance beats; definitely not the formula for pushing the creative envelope.
So with such a void of creativity the underground should be the place for new and exciting ideas, right? Yes and no. Now if you have not been to an Underground show you are missing an experience. A room filled mostly with men facing the stage nodding their heads and pumping their fists; kind of a cross between a group of pigeons and a Nazi rally. The only women you see there are the three bored looking girlfriends of the MC's rocking that night.
With the game so crazy City Slickers are just what is needed. A team that combines mainstream accessibility with underground ethics CS is not about labels. They are about the music. Forged in Boston, MA City Slickers create Hip Hop that combines lyrics and soulful production. The City Slickers Crew provide a real and balanced view of the urban life experience. The good, the bad, the triumphs and the defeats all get told by their ghetto philosopher point of view. Never too mainstream for the underground or to underground for the mainstream, City Slickers are about creating 100% authentic Hip Hop.
The group’s latest chapter began when Capital J and Moses decided to start collaborating. Moses had heat with the tracks and J had lyrics to go. They both realized that they had a love for true Hip Hop. What started as one song grew into the next great voice in Hip Hop. J’s talent for witty songwriting and Moses’ hardhitting yet soulful tracks were a natural match. They reached out to mutual friend and lyricist T-Hustle aka Tommy Tony to work on a track. The chemistry was so strong all three felt they had something special and started building the City Slicker sound.
And what is that sound? A mix of the best of Hip Hop’s then and now. The City Slickers wear their influences proudly on their sleeves. Artists as varied The Native Tongues, Common, Public Enemy, and Jay Z along with underground artist like Concrete Click, Dialekt and Mad Sol and Ripshop helped frame the CS view of Hip Hop. CS are a break from the current state of Hip Hop. Beats and rhymes about real life is the CS agenda.
The music is going to take you on a trip. Life, Pain, Spirituality, and Fun, are all a part of the City sound. Each MC brings a different piece of the puzzle. T-Hustle has a youthful street swagger. Producer/MC Mr. Moses, in addition to being the architect of the CS sound, brings the soul. Capital J provides the consciousness. And the sum of the parts is true Hip Hop that is full of the head nodding beats and clever rhymes that pull you along for the ride. What makes the City Slickers music work is that they are not preaching. They are opening up their lives for you to see yourself. They are walking with you; showing you the way they see the world.
The thing that you have to love about the City Slickers is they just don’t care. They don’t care what you think is hot cuz they are going to tell you what it is. T- Hustle explains, “People have begun to take rap too seriously. Its like you have to be locked in a box and anytime you step out of it, people are ready to take your head off. Don’t matter though. People gonna love us no matter what.”
