KTSU Houston is Texas Southern University's on-campus public radio station, broadcasting at 90.9 FM from a 10,000 watt antenna & boradcasts 24 hours a day.
In 1973, Texas Southern University’s on-campus radio station (KTSU 90.9 Fm) began broadcasting from a tiny studio in the Martin Luther King Humanities Building with a ten mile radius that reached no farther than the Third Ward Community. Today, thanks to an 11 millon dollar pledge from famed TV & radio personality Tavis Smiley, that tiny studio has evolved into a 4.5 million dollar faculty known as the Tavis Smiley Center for Professional Media Studies.
This center was officially opened on February 24, 2005 with Tavis Smiley on hand, along with General Manager George Thomas and TSU‘s Board of Regents.
KTSU, which has the largest African American audience of any public radio station in the country, broadcasts from a facility which includes a state-of-the-art digital announcers studio, student studios, three production rooms, cyber net cafe.. studio, KTSU retail store, multipurpose room and much more. The 18,000 square foot facility stands proudly only a few feet from its old location in the TSU Bell building.
