Long ago, in the winter of 1993, an idea was born amidst the clouds of intoxicating smoke and sea of chemicals in my brain. The idea was simple, yet profound. A thought that a guy like me could move a person that was in no way associated with me (unbiased((not friend or family))) with music that came from my crusted mental womb! Thus Substance was created, but with the surname "Unknown".... Just five stoners with some gear and minimal talent, but an endearing lust for making raw psychedelic industrial noise! The one and only time the original Unknown Substance played to a real crowd was a very successful catastrophe! Chalk it up to too much too fast, but the performance was less than perfect, but the crowd of kids(at least 100) gave a great response. Had to be the drugs!!! So my seed was planted. But it refused to grow, and became an on again off again sorta thing for the next nine years or so... Mostly just an experamental basement concoction.
Then it started getting a bit more serious as I started writing new material that was more pop oriented, aiming to play to crowds and hopefully maybe somehow catch a break. There were only two original members left and we got a chance to open for a national act. With our new band and slew of tunes we were off and running, but as tends to happen, everything went to shit. The band broke up days after the big show, and my main partner and I finally parted ways... I have since kept running. All along I have known that I was not the greatest singer in the world, but the songs always become so personal and difficult to let others sing, plus nobody ever offered, so I did the job myself.Plus it is only Rock and Roll not a fucking opera! As long as you can feel it, I always say...Though I changed the moniker to AquaVulva for a brief period, I decided to drop the "Unknown" from the Substance name as if it were an omen and just keep on keepin' on.
I have since played many shows across northeast Ohio and even once in Michigan and have developed an addiction to audience approval. I suppose that it is just a self-indulgant dream to do what I love, but I'm a dreamer so I'd be nothing without my dreams... Though I've been through many great musicians over the past few years, I have no hard feelings and support every one of them. Hopefully one day I will have the band that I always dreamed of and play together till we are old and dying, untill then I will just keep rollin' with the punches till I get to whats real! Thank anyone who has ever shown support for me and my dreams and always keep posted on what is new in the Substance world. Be sure to check out my side project with my old man, and a slew of guest appearences from northeast Ohio's finest local musicians! We call it Herbin' Legend, and 95% of the recorded material is improvised! I also do all of my own artwork and most of the photography! I need to vent my creativity lest I combust!
SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC, IT SHALL SOME DAY SAVE US FROM THE MUNDANE!
